Description

WILLIAM EL MAY, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE ORAMENTAL WOOD MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 61,549, dated January 29, 1867.
nnTATIoN or OPEN GAMING IN woon.
TO ALL`WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MAY, of Bridgeport, Faireld county, Connecticut, have invented an Imitation of Open Carvings Vin Wood;" and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying dtawing and to the letters of reference'marlied thereon.
My invention consists ofimitations of` open wood vcarvings. `madeby rst applying dies, lin Whichnare cut the desired patterns or objects to the wood, and afterwards cutting away the'wood at the rearso that there may be open spaces between the objects formed in relief by the dies.'
I will nowr proceed to describe a mode of carrying my invention into eifect, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which'forms a part of this specification, and in Which- -Fignre 1 is a front view of a specimen of my imitation of wood carving; and
Figures 2 and 3 are sectional views. v
In producing the imitation of wood carving, represented in the drawing, I. first cut a piece of wood of the dimensions shown in figs. 1 and 2, the grain of theivovod being in the direction of the arrow. IV then take a die so cut that when pressed forcibly on the wood, it will form sunken panels, A Aand B, in which' the leaves,
branches, dac., illustrated -in iig. l, are in relief, the surface of the wood enclosing the panelshaving, in the present instance, simple indented lines arranged at right angles to each other.. -The deepest portion#l of the impression extend half way, thereabouts, through the wood. After the `die has been removed Iv saw the strip on the line l, 2, or otherwise remove the) back s o that the deepest portions of the` impression are cut away, leaving a delicate tracery-of leaves and 'branches across the otherwise opcuvpanels, as Vseenl in iig.l 1. Very beautiful imitations of open wood carvings may be rproduced by this process at a very low price, the imitations being applicable tothe ornamentingof furniture, toilet articles, musical instruments, &o., the beauty of the open tracery being in many cases heightened by a backing of colored silk as adopted in 'connectionwith the open carved work of pianos, book-cases, &c. n
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as anew Ina'nufacti'nte---` Imitations of o pen carvings in wood, made by first 'subjecting the wood to a `pressure of dies, and subsequently cutting the wood away at the back as set forth. A I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this' specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' WM. H. MAY.
litnesses:
SAM. B. HENRY, H. T. BLAKE.
