UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE..
LEONARD BUSHNELL, OE NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
` Wifi IMPROVEMENT IN wooo MoLlhc-as.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,438, dated Novembcr 11, 1873i application filed May 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD BUSHNELL, of New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wood Moldings, of which the following is a specication:
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figures 1 and 2 are two plan views of ornamented molding, such as I propose to make, the ornamental figures being formed with bevel or inclined sides by dies with bevel-sides. Fi g. 3 is a cross-section of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a crosssection of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a front eleva- A tion of a picture-frame, such as may be madev of the stock which I propose to make. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a die with beveled sides,
such as I propose to use for impressing the gures in the surface of the molding; and Fig.
7 is an end view of the die.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents long pieces of molding or frame stock, which I propose to make as longas the lumber out of which it is worked will admit, and in any style or form in cross-section, such as now made; and I propose to finish the sur-V faces with any kind of impressed ornamental gures, as B G, and the like, which I repeat at suitable intervals, as shown in the drawing, either connecting the gures or clusters with a crease or rib, l), or not 5 and these figures I propose to impress with dies or punches E, `having bevel-sides G to form corresponding bevel-sides in the figures, by which they can be made smooth and capable of receiving gold and other metal leaf, and holding it smooth and perfect, which cannot be obtained when `the sides are made at right angles to the surface by pressing-dies, or either at right angles or oblique when made by carving-machinery. The crease connecting the iigures may either be impressed or cut. I also propose to make these impressed figures with bevel-sides on frames already made; also any other moldings or wood-work.
The lines H, in Fig. 1, indicate the manner of cutting the pieces preparatory to making the frames, which are represented in Fig. 5, which shows the arrangement of figures, so that the moldings cut into frames, cornices, and the like, without waste. For these long pieces of moldings the figures may be either sunken or raised. The moldings may be finished by gilding and varnishing `before being put in market or not. I propose to furnish them in either state.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters i I'atent- A wooden or other molding provided with stamped ornamental figures or signs inintaglio, having the sides of the recesses beveled and inwardly inclined, substantially as described, to facilitate the operation ofgilding, as set forth.
LEONARD BUSHNELL.
