Letters Patent No. 97,060, dated November 23, 1869; antelatcd September 22, 1869.
METHOD OF CONSTRUCTING' ORNAMENTAL WOOD-WORK.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom, it may conce-rn Be it known that we, JOSEPH DILL and HUBBARD E. JORDAN, both of the cit-y of Grand Rapids, Kent county, Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Method of Producing Articles of Fancy and Ornamental \Vood-\Vork; and do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of refeieice marked thereon, and the saine are made a part 'Lf these specifications.
The figure in said drawing represents a specimen of the fancy and ornamental articles produced from wood, by means of our invention. l
Ihe nature of our invention consists in the art or method of making various fancy, ornamental and useful articles ot manufacture from wood, hy dovetailng together pieeesot' wood of different kinds and colors,
and then turning the blocks thus 'formed into any desired shape.
In the manufact-ure of ornaments or other articles in accordance with our invention, several pieces' of wood ot' dierent kinds and different colors are iirst dovetailed and firmly pnt together' with glue, thus forming a. solid block of wood or stock.
From the block thus formed, any varticle of ornament orA use nia-y be turned to suit. thel taste or fancy ofthe operator, in the same manner as if the block were composed of one piece ot' wood.
The dovetails may beV of different sizes, it' desired; and the grain of the wood may be made to run in differenti directions in the saine block.
/ In this manner a great variety of coloring and shading may he given, and an endless variety ot' beautiful and unique shapes and figures produced.

After turning, the articles ina-y he polished and varnished, to give them a smooth and finished appear-ance.
\Ve deem this inventionpeculiarly adapted to fancy and ornam'entaLwood-work, but any variety of articles can thus he made.
\Vhat we claim to he new, and to have invented, and what we wish to secure by Letters Patent ol' the United States, is-
rlhe liercin-described method of producing articles of fancy and ornamental wood-work, h v lirst; dovetailing together blocks or pieces of different kinds and di'erently-eolored wood, and then turning the same into they desired` shape, substantially as and for the `purposes set. forth.
