PATENT FFICE,
BASIL JOHN FISHER, OF ASHBOROUGII, NORTH CAROLINA;
SPREADING OR EXPANDING DEVICE.
"srncrrionrion forming part or Letters Patent No. 614,611, dated sweater 22, mos.
Application filed Agni 16,1898.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BASIL JOHN FISHER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Ashborough,in the county of Randolph and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spreading or Expanding Devices,0f which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates tospreading or expanding devices; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is particularly adapted for use in connection with an envelop which cannot be reopened after it has once been sealed without destroying the envelop, such as is described and claimed by me in an application for a patent of the United States and executed and filed of equal date herewith.
In the application referred to I have described and claimed an envelop provided with a folding side piece, folding end pieces, and a folding-flap, said side and end pieces being adapted to be folded and sealed together and each being provided with a slot, said slots being adapted to register when the sides and end pieces are folded together and the fiap of the envelop being provided with a tongue having side wings which are adapted to be folded over said tongue and to be thus inserted through said slots, the folding-wings of the tongue being spread out after the insertion thereof, so as to prevent the withdrawal of the tongue.
The device herein described and claimed is intended primarily for use in spreading the wings of the tongue of said envelop, and is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention, and Fig. 2 a side view thereof.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a device for the purpose herein specified which consists of two similar handle-levers 5, each of which is preferably of a form of an ogee curve, said handle-levers being pivotally connected at 6 in the Serial No. 677,889. (No model.)
manner of a pair of shears, and the longer arms thereof being each provided at its end with a thumb or finger ring 7 and the shorter arms thereof being crossed, as shown at 8, and adapted to swing one over the other, and pivotally connected with the end of each of the shorter arms is a rod 9, and the rods 9 are pivotally connected at their outer ends, as shown at 10. These rods 9 form pivoted jaws, which are adapted to be drawn together or forced apart, according to the movement of the handle-levers 5, as will be readily understood,and it will be observed that the pivotal connection of the shorter arms of the handle-levers 5 with said jaws 9 at 11 is much closer to the pivotally-connected ends of said jaws than to the opposite ends thereof.
By drawing the longer arms or ends of the handle-levers 5 together the free ends of the jaws 9 will be forced apart, and by separating the said longer arms or ends of said handlelevers the said ends of the jaws 9 will be drawn together, and said jaws may thus be inserted into a small opening or between two folded parts and then expanded in order to expand said folded parts, as fully described and claimed in the application for patent hereinbefore referred to.
This device is simple in construction and operation and may be used for other purposes as well as that herein specified, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A spreading or expanding device com= prising two handle-levers which are pivotally connected nearer one end than the other the longer arms or ends of said levers being provided with rings or loops,and the shorter arms or ends thereof being pivotally connected with jaws which are pivotally connected at one end,substantially as shown and described.
2. A spreading or expanding device comprising two handle-levers which are pivotally connected nearer one end than the other, the longer arms or ends of said levers being provided with rings or loops,and the shorter arms or ends thereof being pivotally connected With jaws which are pivotally connected at one end, said handle arms or levers being of the,shape of an ogee curve, and the shorter arms or ends thereof being adapted to cross, substantially as shown and described.
3. A spreading or expanding device consisting of two handle-levers shaped like an ogee curve, said handle-levers being pivotally connected in the manner of a pair of shears, and the shorter ends or arms thereof being adapted to cross, and each being pivotally connected with a jaw, said jaws being pivotally con nected at one end, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 13th day of April, 1898.
BASIL J OIIN FISHER.
