Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Got. 15, 1912.
Application filed November 4, 1911. Serial No. 658,606.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. SrILEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Collar-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The device herein disclosed, is adapted to be assembled with the neck band of a shirt, and with the ends of a collar, to hold the collar, at its front, upon the shirt, the device being adapted to cooperate with the neck-tie, whereby the necktie will maintain the lever portion of the device in close relation to the collar, thereby preventing a displacement of the ends of the collar from the neck band.
A further object of the invention is to provide a structure of this character which may be readily threaded through the but toirholes in the collar, this threading taking place without unduly enlarging the but ton-holes.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com.- bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 shows in perspective, a portion of a collar, having the device of the present invention assembled therewith; Fig. 2 is a perspective of the collar fastener, detached from the collar; Fig. 3 is a sectional plan of the collar fastener; Fig. 4 is a section through the collar and a portion of a neck band, the collar fastener being assembled with the collar and with the neck band; and Fig. 5 is a perspective showing the device engaged with a neck tie.
In carrying out the invention there is provided as a primary element, a button, comprising a body 1, from the center of w ich outstands, at right angles, a post 2, the post 2 being of like cross section from its free end to a point adjacent the body 1.
The invention further includes a lever, fashioned from a single strip of material, bent upon itself to form a cross bar 3, eX- tended through, and pivotally mounted in, an opening in the post 2. The strip of material comprises a pair of converging arms 4, curved, as shown at 5, to fit the neck, the extremities of the arms 5 being bent rectangularly, and at right angles to the post 2, to form a bill 6, which, as shown at 7, is concaved in an outward direction opposite to the curve 5 of the arms 4.
Adjacent the cross bar 3, the arms 4 are constricted by a sleeve 8, the arms being united at their point of bending to form the bill 6, by solder, as shown at 9, or the like. The extremities of the arms, which enter into the construction of the bill 6, may be united by a drop of solder 10, or in any other suit-able manner.
In practical operation, the bill 6, and subsequently the arms 4, and finally the post 2, are threaded through the button-holes in the band 11 of the shirt, and through the button-holes in the collar 12. The lever may then be seized, and be rotated upwardly at its free end, until the bill 6 stands in a depending position, as shown in Fig. 1, between the inner and outer walls of the collar.
Vhen the lever is positioned as shown in Fig. 2, the neck-tie will extend across the bill 7, and maintain the lever in the uplifted position shown in Fig. 1. Owing to the fact that the bill 6 is concaved, as shown at 7, the neck-tie will remain engaged across the bill 6. Moreover, by reason of the fact that the arms 4 are curved, as shown at 5, the lever, as an entity, will fit evenly and smoothly around the collar 12, the lever conforming to the sweep of the collar. Owing to the fact that the post 2 is of like cross section from its free end to a point adjacent the body 1, the post will pass through the button-holes in the collar, without unduly spreading the same, the post 2 being devoid of any bulb or protuberance at its free end. Moreover, since the arms converge, the arms will serve to spread the buttonholes, gradually, to receive the end of the post 2. When the device is mounted in position in the collar, the cross bar 3 will prevent the displacement of thedevice from the collar.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A device of the class described comprising a button including a body having an outstanding post of like cross section from its free end to a point adjacent the body; and a lever fashioned from a single strip of material, bent upon itself to form a cross bar pivoted in the post, and converging arms, curved inwardly to fit the neck, the extremities of the arms being rectangularly bent to form a tie-engaging bill, the bill being concaved in an outward direction opposite to the curve of the arms.
