NITED STATES PATENT GEORGE w. MOGILL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SAFETY-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,919, dated June 15, 1886.
Application filed February 19, 1886. Serial No. 192,566.
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MOGILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety or attaching pins having double prongs pivoted to one end of a shank or plate and adapted to engage pin-guards at the other end of the shank or plate.
The objects of my invention are toimprove the construction of such devices, wherebythey are rendered more strong and durable, and to provide them with a substantial and ornamental shank or body.
To such ends the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a safety-pin made in accordance with myinvention; Fig. 2, aside View of the same; and Fig. 3,-a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3/ 3 of Fig. l, the figures being on an enlarged scale.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now de scribe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, where the numeral 1 indicates the body of the pin, which I will hereinafter term the shank. It is composed of a strip of metal turned outwardly into the form of a tube, leaving the end portions fiat, as at 2 and 3, the latter being bent at each side at right angles, to form the aterally-projecting lugs 4, which are perforated to receive the pin. This pin is composed of a single strand of wire (N0 model.)
bent into U form, to comprise the double prongs 5 and connecting-arm 6, the latter being pivoted in the lugs 4, with the prongs located outside thereof. the shank is bent around at each side, to form the two pin-guards 7, the edges of which are separated by an intervening space, so that by pressing the pointed ends of the prongs toward eaehother they can be passed through said space, and then by their inherent elasticity spring laterally into engagement with the pin-guards.
The shank of the device being. tubular and the pivot-lugs and pin-guards formed integral therewith, a strong, substantial, and desirable safety-pin is provided, which can be used for various purposessuch as pinning together the parts of infants wearing apparel and other garments, and as an attaching device for brooches.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A safety-pin consisting of the tubular shank having flattened ends, one provided with pin-guards and the other with a pivoted double pronged pin, substantially as de scribed.
2. Asafety-pin consisting of a tubularshank having flattened ends, one formed integral with pivot-lugs and the other with pin-guards, and the double-pronged pin pivoted in the lugs, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE XV. MGGILL.
