UNITED STATES PATENT FFIQE.
EMIL REINEKING, OF MELVILLE, NEIV YORK.
PLUMBING IMPLEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,577, dated N overnber 22, 1898. Application filed January 4, 1898. Serial No. 665,526. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMIL REINEKING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melville, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumbing Implements, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The plumbing implement forming the subject of this invention is designed especially for use by bricklayers in plumbing the corners of walls of buildings; and it has for its object to provide a simple and economical device of the character that can be readily applied and removed and folded to be con veniently portable.
The invention consists in the features of construction and the combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the sepa rate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which Figure l isa side elevation of the invention as applied in use. Fig. 2 is a top plan ofthe same; and Figs. 3, 4., and 5 are sections on lines 3 3, 4 4, and 5 5 of Fig. 1.
The said device is employed in plumbing one side only of the wall, the other side being plumbed by a line, and in the drawings, 1 indicates the upright, having an angular socket 2 at its lower end to fit the corner of the wall. The side face 3 of the upright proximate the socket is situated a little distance back from the angle of the socket, as shown in Fig. 1. The said upright 1 is sustained vertically by a lug or projection 4 on the inner face thereof, which rests upon the upper brick, as in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
An arm 5 is pivoted to one side of the upright, just above the socket 2, with its inner face in the same plane with the side of the socket, and is adapted to swing at right angles thereto, as shown, or flat against the side of the upright when not in use. The socket is provided with a spring-catch G to engage the arm 5 when the latter is at right angles to the upright l and resting against the upper end of the socket 2, which formsa stop for the arm. Said arm is also provided with a spirit-level 7. In the outer end portion of the arm 5 is a slot 8, through which passes a clamping-bar 9,having an angular inner and a screwthreaded outer end, so that by means of the nut 10 the arm can be clamped to the face of the wall. The upright is provided with cleats 11, as shown.
In use it is seen that the arm 5 is swung to one side and until it rests against the stop formed by the upper end of the socket and is engaged by the spring-catch 6. A brick is left out of the upper line of the wall and the device is placed against the corner, with the lug resting upon the top brick and the arm 5 horizontal and with its slotted portion extending across the space made by the omitted brick. The clamping-bar is then fastened, and the inner face of the bar is in a strictly vertical plane, against which the bricks can be set. The horizontal plumb line passes across the face 3 of the upright, around which it. is Wound and then secured to a cleat 11.
In this way the corner is readily and con veniently plumbed, while the device can be easily applied or removed and compactly folded.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A plumbing implement, comprising an upright having an angular socket, a pivoted arm having its inner face situated in the plane of one of the faces of said socket and swinging in said plane, and means for securing said arm against a wall, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A plumbing implement, comprising an upright having an angular socket, and an inward projection or lug, a pivoted arm having its inner face situated in the plane of one of the faces of said socket and swinging in said plane, and means for securing said arm against a wall, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A plumbing implement, comprising an upright having an angular socket, a face of the upright being situated a little away from said socket, in combination with a clampingbar extending through the slot of the arm, substantially as andfor the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name, in pres- 15 enee of the subscribing Witnesses, this 24th day of December, 1897.
EMIL REINEKING.
