To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN E. AriLvln, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joliet, in the county of ill and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Frame-Squaring Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for squaring and setting frames, such as door-frames, window-frames, and the like; and the primary object is to provide a simple device of the character indicated, the use of which will facilitate the setting of such frames with great accuracy and expedition.
The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a front elevational view of a frame-squaring device constructed in accordance with my invention, the dotted lines showing brokenly a fragment of a frame; Fig. 2, a broken elevational view of a frame equipped with means for securing it in place; Fig. 3, an enlarged section taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a horizontal section taken as indicated at line 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a section similar to Fig. 4, but showing the squaring-device enlarged by means of a splice-bar; Fig. 6, a face view of a splice-bar employed; Fig. 7 a horizontal sectional view taken, as indicated, at line 7 of Fig. 1, this view illustrating the relation of the squaring-device, the jamb, and the studding or frame-parts to which the jamb is secured; Fig. 8, an enlarged broken sectional view taken as indicated at line 8 of Fig. 1; Fig. 9, a perspective view of bracket-devices which may be usefully employed to secure the frame or amb to the studding of the building.
In the construction illustrated, A. represents the improved frame-squaring device; B, a jamb or frame to be squared; and C, the studding or wall of the building which receives the frame or jamb B.
The squaring-device preferably comprises a pair of parallel vertical bars 1 and 2, whose ends are equipped with complemental arms 1, 2, which are square with relation to the vertical bars and which are adjustably connected together; and a series of frameclamps 3 which are adjustably connected with the bars 1, 2, the clamps 3 being preferably provided with means for retracting them to draw the frame close to the rectangle formed by the device A. The bars 1, 2 may be formed of well-seasoned wood, and are preferably provided, near their upper portions, with spirit-levels 4, which enable it to be ascertained readily when the bars 4 are in a true vertical position. The arms 1 and 2 preferably comprise metal bars which are rigidly secured to the end portions of the bars 1 and 2, respectively; the arms 1 are provided with a series of perforations 1 which are preferably equidistant from each other; and the arms 2 are provided with similarly-spaced threaded studs 2 adapted to extend through the perforations 1 and be secured by wing-nuts 5 (see Fig. 3). The studs 2 have smooth enlarged portions 2 which fit accurately the openings 1 but do not extend quite flush with the front face of the arms 1, thus enabling a desirable clamping-action to be secured. The bars 1, 2 may be equipped on their front faces with loops or handles 6 to facilitate handling the squaring-device.
Each clamp 3 preferably comprises a short bar 7 having its outer end turned rear wardly to provide a frame-engaging flange 7; and a disk or eccentric 8 mounted on a screw 9 which is secured to the vertical memher 1 or 2, as the case may be, near the inner edge thereof. The eccentric S engages a circular bearingor socket 10 with which the member 7 is provided, as shown in Fig. 8; and the eccentric is provided centrally with a flange 11 which serves as a means for turning the eccentric. If necessary, a wrench may be applied to the flange 11 to turn the eccentric. The bars, or adjustable clamps 7, are provided with slots 12 through which extend screws or studs 18, which serve to guide the members in their movement. Each of the vertical bars of the squaring-device is provided with a series of horizontally disposed clamps adapted to engage the adjacent vertical member of the jamb; and each is provided at its upper end with a clamp adapted to engage the upper member of the jamb.
From the foregoing description, it will be understood that the squaring-device may be placed within the frame or jamb; the clamps may be brought into engagement with the members of the jamb; and the clamps may be operated to draw the jamb closely into contact with the edges of the squaring-device at the same time, the spirit-levels serving to indicate when the members 1 and 2 are in a vertical position.
The jamb, after truing, may be secured to the studding of the building by means of the metal brackets shown in Figs. 7 and 9.
These comprise complemental brackets 14,
and 15. The bracket 14: has an arm 14 adapted to be secured to the rear side of the vertical jamb-member, and an arm 14c adapted to be secured to the studding or frame-work C of the building. These arms are provided with perforations adapted to receive nails 16. The arm 14 is provided with a projecting tongue or binder 14. The extremity of the tongue 14 is adapted to pass through a perforation 15 at the base of the arm 15 and be riveted in the manner shown in Fig. 7. The bracket 15 is provided with an arm 15 adapted to be secured to the rear side of the vertical jamb-member, and an arm 15 adapted to be secured to the studding C, The arm 15 is provided with a slot 15 adapted to engage one of the nails 16. In practice, the arm 14 is secured to the rear side of the jamb, the jamb is then inserted in the opening and squared, the arm 14* is then secured to the studding, and the arm 15 of the bracket 15 is then driven in from the opposite edge of the jamb be tween the tongue 14 and the jamb, the forked arm 15 straddling the nail 16. The arm 15 is then secured to the studding. In. this manner, the door-jamb is securely anchored to the studding, after being trued.
It will be understood that the arms 1 and 2 may be connected together to correspond with the width of the door; and in case the squaring-device is to be used for squaring the jamb for a very wide door, the splice-bar 17 shown in Figs. 5 and 6 may be employed. That is, such a splicebar may be employed at the upper end of the squaring-device and also at the lower end. The splice-bar is provided at one end with a series of openings 17 and at the other end with a series of studs 17 These studs and openings are of the same size as are the studs 2 and openings 1 so that the studs 2 will engage the openings 17*, while the studs 17 b will engage the openings 1 The manner of making the connection will be clearly understood from Fig. 5.
The improved squaring-device enables a jamb to be squared with the greatest facil ity at the building, so that it is of no consequence whether the frame has been squared at the mill. Again, this work can be performed with little difiiculty by any handy person, so that the time of the skilled carpenter need not be taken up with this work, unless desired.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible in view of the prior art.
hat I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a frame-squaring device, the combination of a pair of bars equipped at their extremities with arms extending at right angles to the bars, means whereby the arms may be secured directly together, and splicebars adapted to be connected with the arms;
2. In a frame-squaring device, the combination of a pair of parallel bars equipped at their extremities with arms, the arm of one bar being provided with a series of perforations and the companion arm of the other bar being provided with a series of threaded studs, splice-bars, each provided at one end with a series of perforations and at the other end with a series of threaded studs, and nuts, whereby said arms may be connected directly together, or connected with the splice-bars.
3. In a frame-squaring device, the combination with a pair of parallel bars, of ad justable frame-clamping devices carried thereby each comprising a slidable clamping-mcmber provided at one end with a rearwardly extending frame-engaging flange and at its opposite end with a socket, a disk in said socket and eccentrically mounted 011 the corresponding'bar and provided with means for actuating the same, and guides on the bars engaging said clampingmembers.
4. In a frame-squaring device, the combination with a pair of parallel bars and connections rigidly securing them together, of a plurality of disks eccentrically mounted on said bars and provided with means whereby the disks may be turned, and a plurality of frame-clamping members having their inner ends mounted on said disks and having their outer ends provided with frame-engaging projections.
