REVERSIBLE BOOK-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 614,426, dated November 15, 1898. Application filed August 7; 1397- ri l NO- 647,461. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE D. FOSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cam'- bridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reversible Covers for Binding Manuscripts,- of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in the improved construction of the cover in separate leaves, whereby either one of the leaves of the cover can be turned entirely back against the opposite leaf, so as to enable the manuscripts to be more conveniently read or the papers more conveniently written upon, and any desired number of pages may be embraced between the leaves of the cover, the flexible connection between the attaching-strip and the outer portion of the leaf of the cover being adapted to cover and conceal the attaching-strip, the stiff outer portion of the cover being carried forward clear of the attachingstrip when the leaves of the cover are closed upon the side of the manuscript-paper.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an outer side view of my improved manuscript-cover. Fig. 2 represents a top edge view showing the edges of the inclosed sheets of paper. Fig. 3 represents an inner View of the outspread opened leaves of the cover, the attached manuscript-paper being turned to one side. Fig. 4: represents the same with the attached manuscript-paper turned to the opposite side.
In the drawings, A A represent the separate opposite leaves of the cover, the outer portion a of each leaf being made of comparatively stiff material, which is connected with the comparatively stiff attaching-strip b by means of the intermediate flexible connection 0. a
The attaching-strip b is provided with the perforations d d, which are adapted to receive the metallic fasteners e e, the shanks ff of which are passed through the perforations 01 d and through corresponding perforations made in the sheets of paper 0 and spread outwardly from each other at the opposite side, as shown in Fig. 4; but other wellknown fastenings may be employed.
When the cover is attached to the manuscript-paper O, the attaching-strips b are cov ered by the flexible connection 0, so that when the leaves of the cover are closed, as shown in Fig. 2, the fasteners e ewill be con= cealed from view. The stiff outer portion a of the cover will not be folded upon the stiff attaching-strip b, but will be carried over be yond the forward edge of the strip 6 to rest fairly against the surface of the manuscriptpaper 0. The cover will thus present a neat and attractive appearance, and each leaf of v the cover may be readily folded back to the opposite side.
I claim as my invention- 1. A separate reversible cover-leaf, comprising a comparatively stiff front portion, a comparatively stiff perforated strip at its back portion, and an intermediate flexible connection adapted to fold forward and hide the fastenings employed to connect the perforated strip of the said cover-leaf to the paper, and carry the stiff front portion beyond the perforated strip, and to fold backward to the opposite side of the manuscript-paper, substantially as described.
2. A reversible cover formed in two separate leaves, each of which is provided with a comparatively stiff front portion, a comparatively stiff perforated strip at its back portion, and an intermediate flexible connection between the front portion and the perforated strip, and the fastenings passed through the perforations of the perforated strips in such a manner that the said fastenings will be hidden by the forwardly-folded flexible conneotion of the cover, while the stiff front portion will be carried beyond the perforated strip, and either leaf may be folded back against the opposite leaf of the cover, substantially as described.
THEODORE D. FOSTER.
