oaaecs.
To all LP/20177, it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. VVArr, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bookbinding, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a method of binding books and particularly to books provided with leaves having embossed characters for point reading. It is well known that books of this kind are somewhat bulky, requiring strong binding to withstand handling; and it is the object of this invention to produce a binding which is durable, and at the same time reduce the weight and cost of the book.
The leaves of the book are arranged in a series of sections, each section being fastened to an inner flexible back member or foundation. Each section consists of a number of leaves and the entire book is built up of a number of successive sections. By fastening each section independently to the flexible back member, the book can be opened at any place with the leaves lying flat on to the covers.
The details of the invention are more fully described in the following specification and claims; and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the flexible back member attached to the leaves. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the intermediate back attached to the sections. Fig. 3 is a section along the line as a; of Fig. 1. Fig. f is a section along the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a similar section showing the covers attached to. the book. Fig. 6 is a detail view of a leaf.
The following is a description of the method of binding: A suitable number of leaves a are first made up or formed in any number of sections, three are shown in the drawing. As indicated in Figs. 1 to 5, a section is built up of a plurality of folded sheets each sheet preferably comprising two leaves. Each leaf or sheet a has a fold b at the back or binding edge, and the leaves or sheets composing a section are placed so that the fold of one sheet is inside of the foldof the next sheet. Each of these sections is then successively attached by means of staples c or otherwise to an inner flexible member or foundation cl, extending from the top to the bottom of the book, as indi- Specification of Letters Patent.

cated in Fig. 1: and of suflicient width on each side of the back to form a fly or flap 6.
- These flaps are adapted to fasten the flexible member to the inner sides of a pair of cov ers 7, best seen in Fig. 5. If desired the flexible member (Z may be in more than one piece, or in other words it can consist of a series of strips and in this construction, each strip will provide a marginal flap or fly for fastening to the cover. As a supplemental means of securing the book in the said'covers f, the first and last sections are provided with a strip of flexible material 9 attached to each of said sections. The book composed of the sections attached to and held together by the flexible member (Z, is then attached to an intermediate back it of stiff material as seen in Fig. 2, covered with asuitable fabric of sufficient width to provide fly or flap margins 2' to be secured to the The book is fastened by a suitable number of staples to this intermediate back member. The outer covers f consist of three parts of any suitable material the middle part or outer back being inflexible and fastened together in any desired way and connected together so as to provide suitable hinge joints in, on each side of the middle piece or back of the cover which is flat and rigid. The covers 1 are fastened to the book by means of the said flaps g, e and the flies i all of which are attached tothe covers by gluing or otherwise. For giving a neat appearance and finish the flaps can be covered by any suitable material not shown. As shown in the drawing the staples 0 extend from the flexible back (Z through each fold of a leaf and each longitudinal row of staples thus secures a section to the back.
The inflexible intermediate back 7a can be secured to the flexible member or as indicated in the drawing it may be fastened to the sections by means of staples. The stiff back 72, holds the leaves in perfect position with the covers, and at the same time by means of the flies constitutes a medium whereby the leaves are firmly secured to the inner portions-of the covers of the book. In other words it prevents outward move ment of the leaves when the book is opened, equalizing the strain on the flies and the hinged portions of the covers.
As shown in Fig. 6 the single leaf has a fly and a suitable fold Z) whereby the leaf can be fastened to the flexible member.

I claim:
1. A book comprising covers provided with an inflexible flat back having hinge joints, a plurality vof signatures positioned between the covers, flexible fly strips secured to the backs of the first and last signature, a flexible fly member fastened to all the signatures, an intermediate stiff back secured to'the latter member and the inflexible back, said intermediate back being provided with fly margins which in connection with the flies of the strips and the flies of the flexible member are fastened to the inner portions of the covers.
2.- A book comprising covers provided with an inflexible flat back having hinge Copies of this patent may be obtained for fly mar ins which in connection with the flies of t e strips and the flies of the flexible member are fastened to the inner portionsv of the covers.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
