\VILLIAM H. UHADDERTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
INK-BOTTLE;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,289, dated. November 15, 1898. Application filedOotober 19, 1897. Serial No. 65 5,663. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. CHADDER- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink-Bottles, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to ink-bottles and to casings or holders therefor; and the object thereof is to provide an improved combination device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which may be used on a table or desk and also serve as an ornament.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of .my-improved casing or holder; Fig. 2, a central vertical section therethrough and showing the bottle also in section, and Fig. 3 a bottom plan view.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a casing or holder 5, which may be of any desired form and is preferably provided with an outwardly and downwardly directed flange or base-rim 6 and with a central circular opening 7, around which is formed an inwardlydirected annular flange or rim 8, which is provided with a plurality of rectangular notches or recesses 9, two of which are shown in Fig. 3, and I also provide a bottom plate 10, which is circular in form and provided with lugs or projections 11, which correspond with the notches or recesses 9, and said plate 10 is provided centrally with an upwardly-directed annular flange or rim 12, in which is mounted an expansive spiral spring 13, and the bottom plate 10 may be placed in position by holding it so that it can be inserted through the circular opening 7, the lugs or projections 11 passing through the notches or recesses 9, and then by turning said bottom plate it will rest on the flange 8.
The upper portion of the casing 5 is provided with a neck 14, at the bottom of which is a bead or flange 15, and the neck let is smaller centrally thereof than at the top, said top being directed outwardly and provided with an inwardly-directed annular flange or rim 16, which is provided with an upwardly and inwardly directed flange 17, whereby an annular'groove 18 is formed, and I also provide a bottle 19, having a neck 20, and in practice or when the bottle is placed in posi tion it rests on the spring 13, and the upper end of the neck enters the annular groove 18 and is held in place by the top of the casing 5 or the flange or rim 17.
The top of the casing 5 is provided with a cap 21, which is of the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and which is hinged to the casing at one side of the top thereof, which is shown at 22, and secured centrally of the bottom of the cap, which is preferably conveXo-concave in form, is a cork or stopper 23, said cork or stopper being preferably secured to the cap by a screw 24, and the cork or stopper 23 is designed to close the opening in the top of the casing 5 or the opening formed by the annular flange 17, and thus also to close the neck of the bottle. The tension of the spring 13 is such that a bottle of any dimensions will be similarly held in contact with the flange forming the groove 18, thus permitting the use of bottles of various dimensions within the same. v
' The ink is placed in the bottle 19, and the operation will be apparent from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
All that is necessary to open the bottle is to turn back the cap 21, and said cap may be provided with a clasp or any suitable fastening device, if desired, whereby the upsetting of the casing or the accidental turning of the same would not result in spilling the ink.
The casing 5 may be made of any desired material and may also be ornamented to any desired extent, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I
' claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein-described inkstand, comprising a casing or holder open at the bottom and provided with a detachable bottom plate, said casing or holder being provided at the top with a top plate having a central circular opening, around which is formed a raised annular flange beneath which is an. annular space, said detachable bottom plate being also provided with a spiral spring which is mounted thereon, an ink-bottle mounted on said spring and provided with a neck which is adapted to fit in said annular space, and a cover hinged to one side of said casing at the top thereof, and provided with a cork or stopper consisting of a circular disk secured to the bottom thereof, and which is adapted to close said circular opening in the top plate of the casing, substantially as shown and described.
2. An inkstand, comprising a globular casing open at the bottom and provided with a detachable bottom plate on which is placed a spiral spring, said casing being also contracted at the top to form a neck and provided with a top plate in which is formed a central circular opening, said top plate around said opening being raised to form an annular inwardly-directed flange below which is an annular space, an ink-bottle mounted on said spring and provided with a neck the upper end of which fits in said annular space, and a cover hinged to the top of the casing and provided on the under side thereof with a stopper consisting of a disk of suitable mate rial which is secured thereto, and which is adapted to close said circular opening, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 16th day of October, 1897.
WILLIAM H. GI'IADDERTON.
