VELOClPEDE-FRAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,935, dated. November 8, 1898.
Application filed. December 28, 1897- Serial NO- 6631933. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TOM NORTON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at New= town, in the county of Montgomery, Wales, England, have invented a new and useful Im provement in the Frames of Velocipedes, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent of Great Britain, No. 5,676, bearing date the 13th of March, 1896,) of which the following is a full and complete specification.
This invention relates to an improved frame for rear-driving bicycles and some types of tricycles and other Velocipedes; and it consists, essentially, in the use of a double diagonal, the object being to obtain a strong and rigid frame of the open type suitable for the use of ladies.
In the frames of cycles for the use of ladies it is usual to dispense with the top member of the ordinary diamond frame and to strengthen the front part of the said frame, which then only consists of the diagonal member and the member extending between the pedal-crankaxle bracket and the socket of the steeringhead, by means of another member placed over the aforesaid member extending between the pedal-crank-axle bracket and the socket of the steering-head, which auxiliary member is sometimes straight and sometimes curved. Now according to my invention I duplicate the member known as the diagonal, extending upward from the pedal-crank-axle bracket and usually employed to carry the seat-pillar, and I brace the points of junction of this auxiliary diagonal to the other members by one or more suitable pieces arranged in any convenient manner.
In the accompanying drawings, which show illustrated in the accompanying drawings. The arrangement of these members, however, forms no part of this invention.
D designates the members of the lower back fork, and E the members of the upper back fork, forming together the rear part of the frame adapted to receive the driving-wheel, and X designates the auxiliary diagonal, form ing the subject of this invention. This aux= iliary diagonal may either extend past the member 0 and join the member 0, as shown by Figure 1, or it may stop at the member O, as shown by Fig. 3. When it extends beyond the member 0 and joins the member O, the
It will be obvious that this invention may be applied to either the front or the back part of a tandem bicycle or to both parts. Its application to the front part will be apparent from Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4:, showing its application to a single bicycle, while one method of applying it to boththe front and the rear part of a tandem is shown by Fig. 5.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is- 1 In a frame for bicycles and-other velocipedes, the combination with the socket A of the steering-head, of a member 0 connecting the said socket with the pedal-crank-axle bracket, of a diagonal member B extending upward from the pedal-crank-axle bracket to carry the seat-pillar, of an auxiliary member 0 connecting the socket A of the steeringhead with the lower part of the diagonal memberB, of members D extending rearward from the pedal crank axle bracket forming the lower back fork, of members E connecting the rear ends of the lower back fork with the upper ends of the diagonal member B forming the upper back fork and of an auxiliary diagonal member X connecting the upper end of the diagonal member B with the auxiliary member 0 adjacent to the pedal-crank-axle bracket, as and for the purpose set forth.
TOM NORTON.
