UNITED STATES FFIcE.
"ATENT DENTAL ARTICULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,772, dated November 8, 1898.
Application filed December 23, 1897. Serial No. 663,235. (No model.)
T0 to whmn/it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WV. MOFFITT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Articulators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to dental articulators, and has for its object to provide a simple and efficient construction whereby the adjustments of the plates may be readily and accurately effected to meet the varying requirements of service.
To this end the invention, as generally stated, embodies two plates provided with lateral lugs or flanges, whereof those of one plate overlap those of the other and are provided with suitably-located perforations which are adapted to be brought into register during the adjustments of the plates, together with pins adapted to be inserted in opposing perforations in the respective flanges in a manner to secure the parts in their positions of adjustment, all as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of an articulator embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is an end view.
A B represent the upper and lower plates,
. of appropriate shape and size, provided with rearward extensions a 17, having lateral lugs or flanges a b, respectively, the lugs or flanges a being horizontal depending members and those I) being vertical up-projecting members. Each of the plates, with its extension and flanges, is preferably struck up from a single piece of sheet metal, although, of course, .it may be cast or otherwise formed. The flanges, as I have termed them, are so arranged that those of the upper plate may be fitted between those of the lower plate, so as to be vertically and horizontally movable in respect to the latter. The flanges are pro vided with rows of perforations a 6 respectively, those of each pair being directly opposite to each other, so that when the upper plate is adjusted to bring predetermined per forations in its flanges into register with perforations in the up-projecting flanges pins,
as C, may be inserted in the flanges, so as to secure the parts in the desired position of ad= j ustment. By this construction it will be obvious that if the upper plate be adjusted lat erally and longitudinally and one pin be in serted in the registering perforations of the respective flanges said plate may be swung to any desired angle and another pin then be inserted in the perforations of the vertical flanges in a manner to support the upper plate in position and permit the requisite move ments thereof in the practical testing of the denture; further, that the upper plate may be swung on either of the pins and the other pin (or equivalent means) be applied in a manner to support the parts in the angle or position required.
I I claim 1. A dental articulator comprising two plates with overlapping lugs or flanges having rows of perforations therein, in combination with a pin or pins adapted to be inserted in predetermined perforations in the respective lugs or flanges.
2. A dental articulator comprising two plates with rearward extensions and perforated lugs or flanges, each of said plates being struck up from a single piece of metal, in combination with a pin or pins adapted to be inserted in predetermined perforations in the respective lugs or flanges.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto af fixed my signaturein the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN W. MOFFITT.
