CASTING MOLD.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'r'ro BUSSE, a-citizen of the German Republic, residing at 46 Bahnhofstrasse, Hettstedt, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casting Molds, (for which I have filed application for patent in Germany January 18, 1918; Belgium July 10, 1920;
France August 2, 1920; GreatBritain July Y 'through on the line 2-2, Fig; 1;
Fig.3 is a side elevation of a modified construction; and
Figs. 1 and 5 are sections on the lines 4l-4 and 55, Fig. 3, respectively.
It has heretofore been proposed to use divided molds for casting metals and alloys, in which the sides of the mold are symmetrical so that by reversal both faces ofeach side plate may be used, in order to minimize warping and buckling of the plates. In these constructions the plates are secured in position by angle pieces, the shanks of which are secured by screw bolts to the sides against which they lie. For this purpose the sides are provided with dovetail notches into which take the ends of the screw bolts.
The present mold comprises only a base and two reversible side plates, each of which has at its opposite vertical margins, flanges offset in opposite directions, one of which, in assembled position, forms one end of the mold form. The constructionpresents the convenience that in the first place the mere clamping of the two plates together forms the complete mold, and in the second place,
the mere longitudinal shifting of one plate with respect to the other, forms a mold cavity of diflerent width.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the mold comprises a base plate a and the two symmetrically shaped side plates a and b. The side plate a has at its margins the two oppositely Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 18, 1922.
Application filed August 1c, 1921.

faced marginal flanges a and a the plate. I) is and 6 When the two plates a and b are faced against each other, the respective marginal flanges b and a form not only the Four posts cl and f are carried by the base I '70 6, one arranged about half way up the posts plate u. On the posts d are two cross bars and the othernear the top, and both being Similarly provided. with like flangesb held in position by securing rings Z. Associatedwith the ends of the cross bars a are side arms 9, which are engaged with both, I the posts (Z and f and extend slightly beyond the latter. These extensio'nsare slotted to receive the two further cross bars h, with which the projections'are united by the bolts a. In these cross bars h are mounted clamping screws which bear against the plate Z). By tightening these screws the two plates are pressed rigidly together to constitute the mold form adapted to receive the pour in its chamber 0.
After the casting has been removed on the opening ofthe form, the plates a and b are reversed in position to present their opposite faces to the mold chamber 0 in contact with the molten metal of the following pour. p
In the modification shown in Figs. 3, 4, 5,
the plate a is provided at its lower end with a dovetail rib n which takes into a channel 0 of corresponding shape in the base 72, and
is thus held upright. In order. to clamp the plates together, two stirrups g and m, are
slipped over the plates and carry tapped sockets r through which screw the clamping bolts 7c. The "lower stirrup rests on angle brackets s. secured to the side margins of the plates (1 and 6, while the upper stirrup, which is of less width,-rests on the narrow stops 6, over which the stirrup so freely passes.
Obviouslythe reversibility and lateral adjustability of the plates a and b is the same as in the construction first described.
side plates having at their margins oppositely offset flanges forming the end closures of the mold chamber 0n the juxtaposition of said plates.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
DR. OTTO BUSSE.
