Beit known that I, Gnonen W. Jackson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belleville, in the county of State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds, of which the followin is a specification.
This invention re ates to molds, and more particularly to a mold designed for use in the production of cement or similar blocks or tablets to be employed as road, street, or
I vide in a mold of the class above mentioned highway markers, although the mold may be mad use of in molding various other kinds of blocks or tablets bearing letters, numbers, or other characters.
It is another aim of the invention to pronovel means whereby a number of character bearing elements maybe selectively arranged upon one Wall of the mold to produce any desired combination of characters which will appear in the face of the finished block or tablet, the interchangeability of the said character elements adaptin a single mold to be employed in the molding of numerous blocks or tablets bearing different combinations of characters, such, for example, as different street names or numbers.
Another aim of the invention is to provide a mold of the character above mentioned, one wall of which may be readily adjusted so as to adapt the mold for use in producing blocks or tablets of different dimensions.

The mold embodying the present invem tion includes a base 1 which comprises also the bottom of the mold chamber and this base may be provided at its four corners with feet, indicated by the numeral 2, or it may be supported in any other desired manner. The numeral 3 indicates the side walls of the mold and the saidwalls are adapted to be disposed at their lower edges upon the upper face of the base 1 at the lateral edges thereof and the said base at its said edges is provided with sockets 4 which receive studs 5 St. Clair and of the drawings,
12 and the said wall is which are integral with or secured to the said side walls of the mold and project .below the lower edges thereo The end walls of the mold are indicated by the nueral 6 and the said end walls are, as in the case of the side walls 3, disposed at their lower edges upon the upper face of the base 1 1n the manner clearly shown in Fig. 3 r and the said end walls are provided w1th studs 7 which project below the lower edges and fit into sockets 8 upon the end edges of the base 1. The inner faces of the walls 3 at their ends are rabbeted, as at 9, to receive the adjacent ends of the end walls 6' in the manner clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the-drawings. It will be understood thatthe engagement of the studs 5 and 7 in the sockets 4 and 8 serve to support the side and end walls of the mold in upright position when so disposed upon the base 1. However, in order that the walls may be more firmly supported in this position, hooks 10 are pivoted upon the end walls 6 and these hooks are adapted to be engaged with keeper pins 11 located at the ends of the side walls 3. The auxiliary wall of the mold is indicated by the numeral adapted to be disposed at its lower edge upon the upper face of the base 1, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4. However, this wall 12 is of such length that its ends will abut against the inner faces of the end walls 6 of the mold instead of against the ends of the said end walls as in the case of the side walls 3. Therefore, the Wall 12 may be adjusted transversely of the mold so as to increase or decrease the width of the mold chamber. Thus if it is desired to mold a relatively narrow block or tablet the wall 12 will be positioned nearer one of the Walls 3 than it would be in adapting the mold for the production of a wider block or tablet. In order that the wall 12 may be supported in upright position and held at adjustment a clamp is provided and the said clamp is in the nature of a bar 13 provided at one end with a depending clamping jaw 14 which is engaged against the outer face of one end wall of the mold, the said bar extending longitudinally above the mold chamber. At its other end the bar is provided with a depending lug 15 through which is adjustably threaded a clamping screw 16 having a head 17 which bears against the outer face of the other end wall of the mold. llt will not lllllll now be understood that after the wall 12 has been adjusted to the desired position and the clamp has been disposed in place, the screw 16 may be turned so as to cause the head 17 to bear firmly against the last-mentioned end wall of the mold and thus the end walls will be caused to. firmly bind against the ends of the wall 12 for the purpose stated.
In order that characters may be molded in or upon the face of the block or tablet to be produced by the use of the mold, the bottom 1 of the mold chamber is formed with a transversely extending opening 18 and the opposite walls of this opening extend in parallelism and are rabbeted or recessed so as to form seating ledges 19 which serve a purpose which will presently be explained. In order that any desired characters may be molded in or upon the block, there are provided any suitable number of character molding elements, each of which is illustrated in Fig. 3 as in the form of a plate .20 provided at its ends with flanges 21 which are designed to rest-upon the supporting ledges -19 in the manner shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings and be thus supported by the said ledges. Each plate is provided upon its upper face with a raised character 22 and it will be understood byv reference to Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, that any desired number of the character molding plates may be arranged side by side within the opening 18 and with their flanges 21 resting upon the ledges 19, and that the said plates may be interchanged and arranged in a manner to produce any desired combination of characters, such for example, as the name or number of a street. It will be observed that the plates seat within the openings 18 and abut at their ends against the walls of the said opening and it will be understood therefore that the plates are prevented from becoming relatively displaced and on the other hand are held in true alinement. It will also be observed that the upper faces of the plates, except for the raised characters 22, occupy the same plane as the upper face of the base 1 so that, in effect, the plates close the opening 18 and constitute a part of the bottom of the mold chamber. While in the form of the invention shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the plates 20 are provided with raised characters 22, they may be provided with sunken characters as shown in Fig. 4 and indicated by the numeral 23. Of course, in the former, instance the characters will be molded in the face of the block or tablet, where in the latter instance the characters will be molded upon the face of the block or tablet, as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
It will be understood that in the use of the mold the plastic material is poured in the mold chamber and allowed to set and when it has hardened sufiiciently to be handled the mold is inverted so as to discharge the block or tablet on to a suitable drying board or the like, and in order that the plates 20 may be conveniently removed from the face of the block upon which they will be left when the mold is lifted from the block, each plate is provided upon its underside or back with a finger piece or knob 24.
If desired, in addition to the opening 18, the bottom wall of the mold may be provided with another or several more openings 24 in which the character blocks may be selectively arranged as in the opening 18 although if this opening 24 is not to be used it may be closed by a closure member indicated by the numeral 25.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a mold, a base, end walls, a side wall extending between the end walls at one side of the base, a second side wall adjustably movable across the face of the base and extending between said end walls, the said base being formed with a transverse opening extending from the first-mentioned side of the base to the opposite side thereof, a plurality of character molding plates selectively disposed within the opening and including a blank end plate, the lower edge of the second-mentioned side wall throughout its length contacting the upper face of the base and being designed to extend over and contact the upper face of the end plate which end plate is located next adjacent the last-mentioned side of the said base, the opposite longitudinal walls of the opening 11!. the said base being rabbeted to form su porting ledges located below the plane of tile upper face of the base and the said plates having flanges seating upon said ledges.
