MOLD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,701, dated March 14, 1905. Application led May 12, 1904. Renewed February 7,1905. Serial No. 244,568.
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN B. PETRIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Celina, in the county of Mercer and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Mold, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to molds designed especially for use in constructing cement or other artificial-stone building-blocks, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character which may be employed for producing either straight or angle blocks and one in which the contour and design of the faces of the blocks may be widely varied.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mold embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section of a mold for casting angle-blocks. Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse sectional View of the same on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the adjustable member for producing angle-blocks. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a block.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that my improved mold comprises side walls 1, end Walls 2, and a bottom 3, the upper or top of the mold being open to permit filling of the mold with the plastic material.
Upon the outer faces of the sides 1 and extending transversely thereof are end cleats 4, adapted for engagement by retaining members or clamps 5 for holding the parts of the mold in casting position. These clamps which in practice extend horizontally and transversely across the ends 2, have inwardly-pro-t jecting angular portions or armsV 6, provided at their outer terminals with inturned fingers 7, which engage the cleats 4.
The sides 1 have formed or otherwise provided on their inner faces and in alinement a plurality of filling-blocks or primary cores 8,
spaced one from another,l as at 9, said'spaces 9 constituting seats for the ends of hollow removable supplemental cores 10, which when in casting position extend transversely of thel mold between the sides 1, there being provid ed on the inner faces of ends 2 auxiliary blocks or cores 11, extended transversely of the mold between the sides 1 and in alinement with the cores 8 and 10. The hollow cores 10 are preferably formed from sheet metal bent into form, as shown, and having free overlapping portions 12, whereby they are susceptible of transverse expansion and may be secured in position in the mold by retaining members 13 in the form of wedges inserted longitudinally through the cores.
The bottom 3 is made removable from the mold and engaged therewith by seating its marginal edges in suitable grooves or ways' 14 15, formed for the purpose respectively upon the inner faces and adjacent to the normally lower edges of the sides and ends. When the mold is employed with this bottom and the various cores above described in position,there will be produced a hollow block 16, such as is represented in Fig. 5 and comprising a pair of parallel solid portions or walls 17, having smooth outer faces and connected yat intervals by integral homogeneous webs or portions 18. /Vhen, however, it is desired to produce a blockv the outer face of one of the walls 17 of which will be of fanciful design or in imitation of what is known as rockpaste, the bottom 3 will be removed and there will be substituted for the latter a supplemental bottom 19, (indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3.) This supplemental bottom, which may be cast from any suitable material, pressed from sheet metal, or otherwise formed, bears upon its inner face in intaglio the appropriate design to be reproduced upon the face of the block, it being understood, of course, that the bottom 19 has formed thereon marginal iianges or portions for engagement with the grooves 14 15. For producing upon the completed block an end face of suitable design 1 arrange within the mold a face-producing member or device 20,comprising a primary section 21 in the form of an open rectangular frame and a secondary section 22 in the form IOO of a sheet-metal plate pivotally connected to the frame Q1, preferably by means of hinges 23, whereby said sections may be adjusted at any desired angle relative one to the other. The frame 21 is provided at its normally lower edge with a pair of oppositely-projecting trunnions 24, adapted to engage suitable sockets or seats in the adjacent sides of the mold, whereby the frame is pivoted within the latter, while upon the outer end of section 22 is secured a rod 25, the ends of which project transversely beyond the edg'es of the section for engagement with suitable curved guide' ways or slots Q6. provided in curved strapmetal members 27, secured at their ends to the sides of the mold and arching upwardly above the latter, the projecting ends of the rod 25 being threaded for the reception of clamping-screws 28, whereby the device 2() may be lixed against movement. frame Q1 is adapted for the reception of a removable hollow shcet-metal die 29, having stamped or otherwise produced therein, as in the instance of the supplemental bottom 19, the desired fanciful or rock design to be imparted to the finished block. It is to be understood that in practice the device will be equipped with a series of dies Q9, varying in pattern and adapted to be interchanged at will. :Itis further to be noted thatin practice the device 2O may be adjusted for imparting to the end of the block the proper degree of angularity, which may be varied at will, and that one of the angular faces of the block may be given the stone-face design, as above explained.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I The open produce a simple inexpensive device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view,it being understood that minor changes may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. The combination with a mold, of a facing memberdisposed therein and comprising a pair of sections pivotally connected, one of the sections being -pivoted to the mold, and means for adjusting said sections to vary their angular relation to each other and to the mold.
Q. The combination With a mold, of a facing' member comprising' an open frame pivotally mounted in the mold, a pattern-die removably seated within the frame, a plate pivotally connected with the latter, and means for adjusting the platerelative to the frame to vary their angular relation.
3. The combination with a mold provided with guideways` of a facing member disposed in the mold and comprising a primary section pivotally connected with the latter and a secondary section pivotally connected with the primary section, and devices carried by the secondary section for travel in the guideways to vary the angular relation of the sections. 1
