INYBNTOR N. PElzRs Phokoikhognpher. Washington. D. C.
UNITED STATES EPHRAIM IVETT, OF NORTH FERRARA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO I {FRANK SHEERAN, OF SAME PLACE.
HIMSELF AND DIE FOR PRESSING CLAY FENCE-POSTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,604, dated April 29, 1884.
Application filed July 23, 1883. (ModeL) T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EPHRAIM IVETT, of North Ferrara, Perry county, Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Die for Pressing Clay Fence-Posts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved adjustable die for pressing and forming clay fence-posts by means of an ordinary brick or tile machine.
The invention consists of a die formed of an apertured plate on which sliding plates are held in such a manner that they can be adj usted for making posts of a greater or less diameter or any desired shape. Rods extend across the opening in the plate, and from the said rods other rods extend into the opening in the plate, and are held parallel with the longitudinal axis of the obj ect being formed by the dieplate for the purpose of forming longitudinal apertures in the said object.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a face view of the adjustable die, andv Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same on the line as m, Fig. 1.
The die-plate A is provided with an opening, B, through which the clay is forced. On the face of the die-plate two sliding plates, 0, are held by undercut track-strips D, which platesO have the adjoining edges shaped with the same contour as half the section of the desired post, as the edges of the said plates always form the molded sides of the post. The opposite ends of the plates 0 are connected by connecting-rods E with a disk, F, pivoted flat on the die-plate, and provided with ahandle, F,which disk 13 is pivoted out of the center line of the die-plate. A series of straight or curved rods, G, extend across the'opening B, and from the said rods G rods H project into the opening between the curved edge of the plates 0. i
The above-described die is secured to theend of a brick or tile machine, and the clay I is forced out between the inner curved and molded edges of the plates 0, whereby a column or post will be formed the cross-section of which is the same as the shape of the opening between the plates 0,
By turning the disk F the plates 0 can be adjusted a greater or less distance from each other, according to the desired size of the crosssection of the post.
By moving and adjusting the plates 0 gradually a post can be provided which tapers from the base toward the top; or by moving the plates 0 closer together a post having offsets can be produced, &c the rods H H, projecting from the rods G, forming longitudinal openings or channels in the posts for'inserting rods for fastening the posts'and holding slats, rails, wires, 850., to the posts. The posts are then burned in a brick-furnace.
The posts need not be molded in a mold or form, and can be made of any desired length, shape, or thickness with plate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A die for pressing clay fence-posts made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of a plate provided with an opening and two adjustable sliding plates, by
.means of which the opening can be enlarged and decreased, as set forth.
2. In a die for pressing fence-posts, &c., the combination, with aplate having an opening, of the sliding plates 0 and the rods H, held on curved rods G, extending across the opening of the plate A, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In adiefor pressing fence-posts,the combination, with the plate A, having an opening, B, of the sliding plates 0, the connecting-rods E, and the disk F, provided with a handle, F, substantially as herein shown and described.
