SHEARS OR SCISSORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,617, dated November 1, 1898.

Be it known that I, ELI BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, formerly residing in the city of Macon, in the county of Macon and State of Missouri, but now a resident of the city of Brantford, Brant county, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shears or Scissors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.
My invention relates to shears or scissors having an adj ustment-yoke applied to their pivotal point to bind the two blades thereof together with a requisite amount of pressure to enable the accurate working of the implement; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a side view of a pair of shears constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. II is a cross-sectional view taken on the line II II, Fig. I. Fig. III is a longitudinal sectional View, taken on the line III III, Fig. l, through the portions of the blades adjacent to the pivotal point, the pivot-pin and yoke being shown in elevation. Fig. IV is an inner face view of the pivot portion of one of the blades. Fig. V is a detail sectional view taken on the line V V, Fig. III.
l designates one of the shears or scissors blades, having a handle la, and 2 is the other blade, having a handle 2f. Each blade has a flat bearing-surface 4 (see Figs. III and IV) at the inner portion, and from these Hat surfaces the blades are formed with concaves 3, that extend from said surfaces 4 to the points of the blades, the concavity continuing to the end of each blade in conformity to the portions seen in Fig. III. The concave 3 extends from the outer to the inner edges of each blade, and said outer and inner edges are on plan es with the bearing-surfaces ,as is clearly shown in Fig. III. By this arrangement the working of the shears or scissors is rendered extremely accurate by reason of there being a minimum of contacting surfaces throughout the implement.

The blade 2 is provided with a cavity 6, that receives the inner end of the pivotpin 5, the said pin being adapted to fit into said cavity to a nicety to prevent play of one blade on the other. The pivot-pin 5 is provided with a shoulder 5, that limits the eX- tent of the insertion of the pin, and it has at its outer end a rounded boss 5b. The pin is removably seated in the blade 1 in order to allow of its withdrawal during the operation of grinding or sharpening the blade at any time. The blade 2 -has a recess 7 in its outer face directly opposite the central por tion of the pivot-pin 5.
8 designates 'a yoke one end of which is provided with a stud 9, adapted to seat in the recess 7 of the blade 2. The other end of the yoke is provided with a cavity 10, that receives and fits over the rounded boss 5b of the (See Figs. II and III.)
The yoke 8 has a screw 11 attached to one of its arms and extending beyond said lastmentioned arm. On the free end of the screw is an adjustment-nut 12, whose inner end is provided with a screw-thread that engages the thread of said screw. The nut l2 is formed with a recess 12a in its outermost portion, that receives a shouldered head 1liL of the screw 1l. By this arrangement the screw 11 may be made of only sufficient length to allow the nut 12 to be turned onto the screw l1 a suficient distance to tighten the clamp 8 upon the pivot-point of the shears without the headed or free end of the screw projecting beyond the outer face of the nut, and when the nut is loosened to allow the removing of the clamp 8 for the separation of the shearl blades said nut cannot entirely escape from the screw 11, owing to the shouldered head coming in contact with the base of the recess l2a and limiting the turning of said nut. Thus the nut is prevented from becoming detached from the screw, in which event it might become lost or misplaced.
While I have shown and described my invention as applied to shears or scissors, I do not limit myself to its use for this particular implement, as besides its use in connection with shears or scissors of all kinds it may be applied with equal facility and advantage in the construction of pliers, forceps, surgical instruments, or other devices of like character.

I claim as my invention- 1. In a pair of shears or scissors, the coinbination of a yoke having its ends applied to the pivotal point of the blades thereof, and adjusting means applied to said yoke at a point removed from the pivotal point of the blades; substantially as described.
2. In a pair of scissors or shears, the coinbinatiou of a yoke having its ends applied to the pivotal point of the blades thereof, a screw seated in said yoke at a point removed from the pivotal point of the blades, and extending` from one arm thereof through the other arm, and a nut applied to said screw, through means of which the ends of said yoke may be contracted to bind said blades at their pivotal point; substantially as set forth.
8. In a pair of shears or scissors, the coinbinatiou with the blades thereof, of a removable pivot-pin in one of said blades,A the other of said blades being provided with a cavity adapted to receive said pivot-pin, and a yoke applied to said blades at their pivotal point, substantially as described.
4f. In a pair of shears or scissors, the oombiuation with the blades thereof, of a yoke adapted to be applied to the pivotal point of said blades, a screw seated in said yoke, a nut on said screw, said nut being provided with a threaded portion adapted to engage said screw, and a recess, and said screw having a shduldered head adapted to fit in said recess, substantially as described.
