Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 15, 319318.
Application filed August 29, 191?. Serial No. 188,807.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN Sorronnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Cloud, in the county of Stearns, and State cf Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Combined Hand Hoe and Shaver, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined hand hoe, weeder, and ice shaver, or scraper, one, of theobjects of the invention being to pr0- vide a simple compact device which can'be readily adjusted so as to be used as a hoe with the handle extending at any desired angle therefrom, which can be used as a tool for shaving the top soil to cut out Weeds, and which can also be used as a means for removing ice from pavements.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention. relates in the combination and arrangement of the parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without de parting from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool arranged for use as a hoe.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the tool adjusted for use as a weeder and, in dotted line as an ice chopper.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a structure with the parts in position s shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 desi nates a handle having a ferrule 2 from w ich extends a neck 3 terminating in an eye 4:- Arranged-on one face of this eye is a series of radial teeth 5 and extending through a squared opening 6 in the center of the eye, is a squared portion of a bolt 8. This bolt is extended through an eye 9 provided on one face with a series of radial teeth 10, these teeth being adapted to extend between the teeth 5 as shown in Fig. 3, thus to hold the two eyes against relative rotation. A nut 11 on the bolt is used to bind the eyes 4 and 9 together so as to hold their teeth interfitting.
however, and as shown in full lines in Fig. :I;
2, a further adjustment of the line 9 can be made so as to bring the hoe fi l in a plane substantially parallel with the handle which time the tool can be used as a weeder. Should it. be desired to use the device for cutting ice and scraping it off of pavements or like, it is preferred to adjust the blade to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. When thus positioned the heel portion 15 of the arm 12 comes against the ferrule 2 and holds the blade approximately at 45 degrees to the ferrule, and when the blade 14 is chopped down into the ice the force of the blow is transmitted directly from the blade through the heel portion of arm I2 to the ferrule or sleeve 2 and the arm 12 and the eyes a and 9 are thus relieved of the excessive strains to which they would otherwise be subjected during the chopping of ice.
at is claimed is An implement of the class described in cluding a handle, a ferrule thereon, an eye at one end of the ferrule, an angularly adjustable eye normally engaging one face of the eye upon the ferrule, means for holding the eyes against relative movement, a tangential-arm extending from the adjustable -eye and having a heel portion, a web ex tending at an acute angle from said heel portion, a blade connected to the web, said arm being adjustable angularly with its eye to bring the heel portion into contact with the ferrule and the blade at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the ferrule.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
HERMAN SOHOENER.
