L- H. ALLEN.
SAFETY RAZOR. APPLICATION FILED AUG.9. 1919.
' Patented Sept. 7, 1920.
WITNESS: INVENTOR, W% 7W Zfll/Z'JHAZZflZ, I BY ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS H.1LLEN, or wns'r SPRINGFIELD, ivrAssAonUsETTs.
T 0 all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, Lnwrs H. ALLEN, of
Nest Springfield, county of Hampden, and
Commonwealth of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States of America, have invented is to provide means for permitting the cutting edge of the blade to be tipped at an angle to the axial line of the handle, whereby when the razor is used the implement will have a shearing or draw out action on the beard. It is a well known fact in the use of safety razors that they do not operate like the ordinary razor from the fact that the blade has a straight pull rather than a slanting or draw'cut action. 7
The invention broadly considered comprises means for frictionally retaining the blade holding member at an angle to the handle, for permitting the holder to be tipped and retained in any desired position or angle. The invention includes a flexible or elastic washer that is located on the threaded end of the handle and interposed between this end of the handle and the blade holder.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the various parts separated from each other.
F1g. 2 is an elevational view showing the blade holder tipped at an angle to a plane passing through the axis of the handle, the plane being considered as normal or at right angles to the blade holding'members.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the elastic washer, and
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2 showingthe parts assembled.
Referring to the drawings in detail: 1 designates the handle having the curbed shank portion 2 that is provided with the threaded end 3, the shoulder portion 4, and a raised part 5. The blade holder is indicated at 6, the blade at 7, and the clamp for holding the blade in the holder is indicated at 8. The holder 6 is formed preferably of thin material, as sheet steel, and having a struck-up portion 9. This portion has an opening and an internal thread as indicated at 10. The raised portion 5 of the handle corresponds in shape with the opening 11 in the spring SAFETY-RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. *7, 1920. i Application filed August 9', 191a SerialNo. 316,434.
t will be noticed that the washer 12 is cup-shaped in order to provide a thin flexible bendable edge 15, which edge bears against the holder 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. In operation the holder 6 is rotated when the parts are assembled, thus placing a compression on the washer 12, and permitting the holder to be tipped or inclined at any suitable an le to a plane passing through the aXis of the handle and normal to the blade holding members, as shown in Fig. 2 in dotted lines. The washer will frictionally retain the same in ilace, as desired.
It is of course understood that the form of the opening in the washer shown in Fig. 3 prevents the washer rotating when either the holder or handle is rotated. The washer is therefore held firmly between the shoul der 4 and the holder 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. It is also evident that the holder 6 may be tipped at an angle opposite from that shown in Fig. 2 to suit the convenience of the user.
From this description it will be seen that I have provided a device for effectually retaining the blade and its holder of a safety razor at any desired angle relative to the axial line of the handle, in order to impart a draw-cut action of the blade when in use.
hat I claim is:
1. In a safety razor construction, the combination, of a handle, a holder therefor, a threaded end portion on the handle for attaching the handle to the holder, the handle having a shoulder portion, a raised portion between the shoulder and the threaded portion, a spring washer having an opening that engages the raised portion, said opening being of such shape as to prevent'the washer rotating when the handle is threaded into the holder to place the spring under compression.
2. In a safety razor, the combination, of a handle thereof and having a threaded attaching end for entering a struck-up threaded opening in the blade holder, a shoulder on the handle, a cup shaped elastic member having a thin bendable edge located between said holder and the shoulder on the handle, whereby when the handle is threaded lnto mg is provided with the two parallel sides .13, and rounded ends 14. The washer 12 is I the blade holder the cup shaped elastic membar is Placed un em mplr i n Q.-. ".r 9t 9l-..=

and a cup shaped elastic Washer-like member fitted, nesting relatipn oyer the struck up'portion with an edge engaging the holder and an inner central portion engaging the holder, whereby When the handle and holder are threaded into each vother the c pshap ed meinher is" placed under compre's'sio'ii and frictionally retains'tlle holder at any desired angle in the plane of its rotation, as described;
