To ALL WHOM m. MAY 00mm,
Be it known that I, DE VVLTT S. RAWSON, of the city of Porn, in the county of La Salle, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Stereoscopic View Box; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact dcscrihtion thereof, reioronco being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of rofcrence marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to produce a stereoscopic instrument, in connection with the packing-box for pictures, in such a manner that when opened out several pictures may be viewed in succession without the usual handling of each picture, and when closed the views and instrument will be contained in the same package. In order to accomplish this, Iprepnro a box, A, about eight inches in length-and about five inches in width and depth, the picture-box H, occupying about one-half of the box, being at the bottom. The cover 13 of said box A; is hinged about one inch back of the middle, and on its inner side are attached stereoscopic lenses 0, arranged in any of the usual forms, and. hanging upon a pivot so in one position it will close down into the box, but when opened and turned outit will extend beyond the cover The front D is attached to about one-third of the bottom, and with it forms a-right angle, and is made to turn on pivots near the lower front corners; near the middle of said front isthc picture shelf or brackets E .i, upon which several pictures may at onetime be placed. The object of the movable front is to throw the pictures when placed thereonout of a perpendicular, so as to keep them in position, and also thatthey may stand at nearly right angles with the line ofgvisiou of the lenses when in position, and also to assist in obtaining the focus by being moved back and forward as occasion may require, 7
The manner of operatingsaid instrument is to open and turn back the cover B sons to stand at an angle of about forty degrees, then swing the front forward to stand at nearly a right angle with the cover, -when it will be found that the portion of the bottom attached to the front has raised the fronts of the views to a position easily grasped by the hand, when they may be placed on the brackets E D; the lenses may then he turned in position to view the pictures and place the eyes to the picture in the usual manner. With the right hand the movable front may he moved to adjust the focus, when it is desired to change the view; with the right fore-fingeron the top of it, tip it forward till'it will fall into the picture-box H, when its successors may be viewed and treated in the some manner.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The picture-box H, the swinging front I), and shelves or brackotsll E, substantially as herein described.
