stroom-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 612,491, dated October 18, 1898.
Application iiled November 5, 1897. Serial No. 657,497. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. ECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Broom-Heads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a new and improved broom-head having a reversible handle-bail; and to accomplish this object the present invention consists in the features of construction and in the combination or arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference beingmade to the vaccompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a broom having a head constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is aseotional view taken on the line on, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a plate which fits upon, embraces, and constitutes a part of the wooden broom-head'. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the Scrapers, and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional elevation of the handle-bail.
A broom is shown with bristles at 1 and a head at 2. This head is transversely bored at one or more suitable points for the recep-v tion of a suitable number of bolts or fastenings 3. l
A plate 4, adapted to sit on head 2, has oppositely-located flanges 5 at suitable points.
These flanges are adapted to sit against opposite sides of head 2. with iianges 7.
The plate-flanges 5 and scraper-flanges 7 being perforated to correspond to the bore of head 2 a bolt 3 in said bore and perforations will secure the plate and scrapers to the head. Two bolts 3 are shown in the drawings.
The broom-head plate 4 is formed With upwardly-projeeting bearing-lugs 8 and with a toothed segment 9 centrally between saidlugs. The pivots 10 on the ends of the handle-bail 11 are mounted in the bearing-lugs 8, and the bail is provided at its handleesocket 12 with a bolt 13, having actuating or withdrawing handle 14 and normally held by spring 15 in position to engage the lookin g or holding teeth 9. Such engagement keeps the handle-bail 11 in required position.
The tapped bail-socket 12 is adapted for the Scrapers 6 are provided reception of a threaded ferrule 16 of handle 17, so that when the latter is broken it can be detached or unscrewed and another handle applied, or ferrule 16 can be applied to any other or new handle.
As seen in Fig. 4i, the Scrapers have receding cuts 18. The plate-flanges 5 and scraperflanges 7 being made to overlap, the cuts 18 at the proper places allow the plate-flanges 5 to sit toward the head 2, the flanges 5, when received or seated in the cuts 18 and engaged by bolts 3, holding the plate 4t firmly in place.
When the bristles are worn off at one side, the handle can be reversed by engaging bolt 13 to different teeth of segment 9. broom is worn out, the det-aching of the plate L1,with handle, and their application to another broom is readily effected by the bolts 3.
The scrapers 6 or their flanges might be permancntly secured to thebroom or to head 2, or secured independently of plate 4; but a common fastening 3 for the plate and scrapers is practical. In place of having cuts 18 in the scraper the head or wood 2 might be cutaway to seat the flanges 5 of plate 4. When the scrapers are detachable, but one scraper 6 need be applied to the broom, as in case of `the reversing of the handle the scraper can be reversed or transposed from one side to the other of the broom-head.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a broom-head having transverse bores, of a broom-head plate having upwardly-projecting bearing-lugs and downwardly-projectin gside flanges which em.n brace the broom-head, a scraper-plate resting against one of the side flanges of the broomhead plate, tie-bolts passing through the scraper-plate, the broom-head and the side flanges of the broom-head plate, and a handle-bail pivotally mounted on the said bearing-lugs, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set If theI my hand in the presence of two subscribing
