DUAL-STAIRWAY SYSTEM FOR FLATS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,174, dated September 6, 1898.

Be it known that I, KYRLE SIDLEY EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dual-Stairway Systems for Flats, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in dual-stairway systems for flats or apartmenthouses, with especial reference to the construction of the rear stairways of two-story flat-buildings.

The object of my invention is to economize space in the provision of separate meansof access to and from the flats leading from the ground entrance or from the basement to the attic, the space in both basement and attic being usually subdivided for the use of the respective tenants.

In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a two-flat building with a portion of the wall broken away to show the arrangement of the stairways. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are horizontal section views drawn, respectively, on the lines so a, g y, and z a of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an outside View showing the two entrances.

Like parts are identified by the same reference-letters throughout the several views.

With the exception of the basement-stairway pertaining to the upper flat both stairway systems occupy a rectangular space inclosed by the exterior wall A of the building and the partitions B, C, and D, the stairways being arranged around an inner rectangular space or shaft formed by the partitions E, F, and F.

The entrance G of the lower flat opens upon a landing H, from which a stairway I leads downwardly to the basement between the par tition E and the rear wall of the building. A stairway I also leads upwardly from the landing H to the first-fioorlanding J, passing between the partitions F and B. From the landing J a stairway K leads upward and around the partitions F, E, and F to the attic. The stairways I, I, and K are for the exclusive use of the tenants of the first floor.

The entrance L of the upper flat opens upon a landing M, from which a stairway leads downwardly to the basement at the right hand of the entrance, and astairway 0 leads upward at the left hand directly above the basement-stairway I of thelower flat and ex tends around the partitions E and F above the landing H and stairway I to the secondfloor landing P. From this landing a stairway Q leads to the attic around the partitions F and E and above the stairway J of the firststory flat.

It will be thus observed that the stairways of both the upper and lower flats are arranged in the same rectangular column with great economy of space. The space partially inclosed by the partitions E, F, and F is pro vided with floors at. each landing, thus affording a convenient place within which to set an ice-box or similar article of kitchen furniture.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a two-story flat-building provided with separate entrances for the respective tenants, the combination of the stairway-in closing walls, a central shaft, two separate landings located opposite the respective en trances, two separate stairways, one leading from one of said entrance-landings around the central shaft to the first floor, and the other leading around said shaft from the other entrance-landing to the second floor, and two separate stairways leading respectively around said shaft from the first and second floor landings directly to the attic without any intermediate landings, the stairways leading from the respective landings being independent of each other and leading to different parts of the attic, substantially as described.

2. In a two-story flat-building provided with separate entrances for the respective tenants, the combination of the stairway-inclosing walls, a central shaft, a separate floor located in said central shaft at the landings of the first and second floors, a doorway or opening communicating with said central shaft at said separate floors and landings, landings located opposite the 'respective entrances below the level of the first floor, two separate stairways, one leading from each of i said landings to separate parts of the basement, two separate Stairways, one leading from one of said entrance-landin gs around the attic without any intermediate landings, sub- I0 stantially as described.

In testimony whereof I aflix my signature central shaft to the first floor, and the other in the presence of two Witnesses. leading around said shaft from the other entrance-landing to the second floor, and two separate stairways leading respectively around said shaft from the first and second fioorlandin gs directly to separate parts of the KYRLE SIDLEY EVANS.
