UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'DEOATUR 'I-L'HIBBERT, OF WALLINGFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOUSE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,032, dated December .18, 1894. 1
Application filed October 24,1894. Serial No, 526.786. (N0 model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DECATUR H. HIBBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wallingford, county of Delaware, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Houses, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object a novel construction whereby on a comparatively narrow frontage upon a street awide front of house is obtained, and also consists in novel internal arrangements in connection with this construction.
My improvement is especially applicable to houses which are to be constructed on the corners of streets, all of which will be more clearly shown in the drawings, which illustrate an embodiment of my invention.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a cellar plan Fig. 2 is a plan view of the first story, and Fig. 3 a plan view of the second story.
The main walls of the house, as will be clearly seen, on two of the sides, to wit: the
sidesmarked A and B, are, as in the ordinary house, usually at right angles to each other, while the walls marked 0 and D in my con struction have the wall E in common, said wall E making an oblique angle with each of the walls 0 and D. By this means, a front is obtained from the point e to the pointf, the front being partially upon one street and partially upon the other, and being of greater length than if the Walls 0 were extended until they met, the streets being parallel, respectively, with walls 0 and D. The point where the wall E commences on the wall 0 and ends on the .wall D may be varied.
In Fig. 2, which shows the first floor plan, the central portion of the house is formed into a library which extends vertically up above the second 'floor, and is provided at the level of the second floor with a balcony or portion projecting over a portion of the space of the said room so as to form practically a balcony around said library portion, having openings from said balcony into the various rooms, thereby forming a passage to the several rooms, and providing a library with a lofty or high ceiling, (see Fig.3;) but the essential feature of my invention consists in forming a portion of the main or foundation walls of the house at right angles to each other, and havingia wall common to the walls of two sides and forming an oblique angle with each of said walls; and further, in forming in said angular portion a room which extends vertically above the second floor and is provided with a surrounding balcony at the level of the secondfloor, having openings therefrom into the various chambers.
In the various'drawings, I have shown different floors divided up into various rooms, although I do not by any means intend to limit myself to the particular formation of the rooms, except as will hereinafter be specifically claimed; but to particularize, as shownin the drawings, thus, in Fig.1, which is the cellar plan, 1 is a rear cellar; 2, a refrigerator; 3, the laundry; 4, brick walls; and on Fig. 2, 5 is the dining room; 6, the kitchen; 7, the parlor; 8, the passage; 9, the hall; 10,
, the library, and 11, a partially covered porch;
and in Fig. 3, 12, 13, 14: and 15 are chambers, 16 is the open space above the library, and 17 thebalcony, having openings therefrom into the various rooms, which are clearly indicated in the drawings.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-- 7 A new and improved construction of house having two foundation walls at substantially right angles to each other, and two other foundation walls intersecting said last mentioned Walls and extending a part of the distance of the width and length of the house and connected by a wall making an oblique angle with the two last mentioned walls, and provided with a room, in the portion formed by the last mentioned wall, which extends ver- DECATUR H. HIBBERT.
