: yTo all whom t may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS DAVID CRAW- V FoRn, a.eitizen of the United States, residingat Hammond, kin the county .of Lake vand State of Indiana, 'have invented, a newand useful Unit Type of Fixtures for Self- ServingStores, of which the followingis a speciication.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved type of self-serving stores hav ing anovel-unit type of fixtures which per! mits of the rapid and convenient installation of'the store fixtures without their being nailed to the Walls or floor of the building so that they may remain the personal prop# erty of the occupant of the store and not be' i come a part of the realty which would trans fer their `ownership to the landlord of the v building. It is further myobject to provide `20 an improved arrangenientof aisles and improved details of construction as disclosed.
. in the accompanying drawings, in Which-'- p Figure 1 is a top plan of a store construct ed in accordance with my invention and of sufficient width to providethree main aisles;

Like numerals designate like parts in each of the several views. i
Referring to Figs. land 3 of the aooomty panying drawings, I provide -a suitable front railing or partition 2v spaced back a suitable distance from the main entrance door 1 of the store building. `This front partition or railing is provided with a suit- 7 0 able inwardly opening entrance door 3 which is automatically operated by the weight of the customer as he steps on ther trap 4 in front of the door, 'permitting him to en ter 'andselect a suitable vbasket from 75' thebasket rack 5, and thence pass down the main. entrance aisle 6 to the rear aisle 'Z from which he may pass down the outside aisle 9, or if the store is of the type shown in Fig. l, down either aisle 9 or central aisle 80 8. I provide a iiour bag counter 10 -at the front end of the shelving 19. `Where there is an intermediate aisle 8 I provide a1 passage 11 between such intermediate aisle and the outer aisle 9. Should the store be of 85 sufiicient width it is Within the contemplation. of my invention to provide a plurality of similarjintermediate aisles 8 andpassage- `ways 11. -I provide suitable bundle counter 13 adjacent the passageway12 which 90A opens into the exit passage 15, leading past the cashiers desk 14 to the outwardly swinging door 16.` I provide a suitable openface refrigerator 17 from which the clerk at .the counter 13 may obtain .for customers articles 95 .theymay select; vI also provide'a table 18 forfgeneral use near vthe entrance of the store.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 3, I proa/ide a,
ser-ies 'of shel-vings 20 alongthe sides the 100 store and one or more series of shelvings-19 intermediate between the shelvings 20. I
v further provide the rear shelving 2lhaving `,suitable reardoors' 22 opening into a stoc room 23 provided with suitable table 24 and .105
other necessary equipment. 4I provide'suitablemirrorsf-25 :mounted onthe :top of the rows of'shelvingsQO/at a suitable angle to 4for` connecting themv together in such arp-'Vv` p frtedby la Asuitable groovedi-4 i 4 p as shown. The series of intermediate shelv foot rail 26 which is secured to the floor by screws and reinforced by the fioor braces 33 which are attached to the upright posts 27. The posts 27 are provided with vertical channels 26 to receive the frame -portions of the panels 29, which panels are provided with upperscreens 30. I provide a horizontalrail 31 which isattached by bolts 32 to the upright posts 37.
i Referring to Figs. 8 to 11, illustrating in detail my unit construction of shelving, l
provide a series of shelving, each unit contained in laying out the aisles, etc.. and the side shelving 2O will be set away from the walls the necessary number of inches to sisting of a rear'w'all 35, side walls 34, alf/ maintain the multiple unit measurements of iioor or bottom wall 42, and a top 36.. l'
further provide upright rack bars 38 eX- tending the entire vertical length of the inside of the shelving and having suitably spaced notches 39 adapted to receive and support the removable cross bars 40 which in turn support the adjustable shelves 41, as shown in Fig. 12. These shelves are removable', permitting their arrangement at any desired height.
Adjacent units of shelving are secured together longitudinally by suitable bolts 43,
Referring to Fig. 13 provide suitable end clips 46 which may be bent at any desired angle for` securing the ends of shelv, ing units together where the shelving is ar ranged in semi-circular ior in other arrangements Where the units of the shelving are disposed at an angle to each other.
eferring to Figs. 14,1 15 and 16, the basket rack 5 is provided with slatted sides 47 and slatted ends 49 and a slatted bottom 46, and a suitable rack 50.
Referring to Fig. 17 there is illustrated a detail sectional view f the trap door .4
- which on being depressed lowers and re- 45 leases tir catch 51, permitting the door to be automatically .swung open by the spring (Fig. l). The trap door 4 is maintained in its normally raised and door-locking position by the spring 52 which encirclesthe bolt 53, bearing on the washer 54.
The main purpose of my invention is to provide the novel type of shelvings which are adapted to be readily set up in the manner shown, which are not attached to the walls of theJ building at all and are only releasably attached to the iioors in the manner described, thus permitting the store fixtures to remain the personal property of the one who installs them. All units of the shelving are of a like unit size and are pro- `vided with like spaced openings for .their convenient attachment by the . fastening devices 43, 44 and 46 in whatever position the shelving may be set. up. The basket bin, the vflour rack, the coiinter and the front aisles and shelving transversely of the store, thus an aisle will be a certain multiple of the width of the shelving in all instances. il have dispensed with the use of turnstiles as I have found that a trap door of the type illustrated in my drawings permits the use of a narrow entrance passage and at the same time permits the more rapid entry of customers than does a turn stile. For the exit passage no turnstile is necessary since the customers are under surveillance of the cashier as they pass out through passage 15. By providing the connecting passage 1'1 between main aisles I afford the, customer means of more expeditious passage through the store in case he does not care to inspect the entire stock of goods. My shelvings .are different lfrom other sectional cases in that they are all fas tened together by the novel U-shaped links 44 which are readily inserted in the openings 45, and are equally useful when the units of the shelving are arranged in staggered arrangement if such arrangement isdesired. The openings 45 are disposed about four inches apart, starting about two inches from theend ofeach unit of shelving. The series of shelvings illustrated in Fig. 9 are eight inches deep and ten inches high,`which dimensions are illustrative of what I have found a desirable size of unit construction. Links 44 are made close enough to bind tightly and are driven in place. Where cases are arranged at an angle to each other, as shown in Fig. 13, their ends are secured together by suitable clips 46 and these clips may be flexed to suit any angle at which the cases may besarranged.
lt is within the .contemplation of my invention to adapt the shelving to an eX- tremely narrow store by arranging the refrigerator 17 the counter 13, and the iour rack 10 longitudinally instead of transversely of the length of the store. The unit type of fixtures described permits of an adaptation of my shelving to any store building regardless of its shape and permits the utilization of extremely narrow-rooms for the installation of self-serving stores.
What I claim is:
1. In store fixtures of the class described, the combination of duplicate shelving cases,
jacent openings, the openings being s aced a like distance a art, and the cases ing seeurable back to ack, the desired relation,
- at will. l
2. In 'a unit type of fixtures for Self-serving store, series of detachablev shelving -cas 410 cases arranged form aisles for the pas-v sage of customers, said cases being of untar size,- fastening means for securlng the en s of alned cases together, independent4 removable fastening means for securing 'intermediate rows of shelving casesy firmly together back toback, separate doors for the entrance and exit of customers, and all of said doors being a multiple of the size of the THOMAS DAVID CRAWFORD.
