GATE.
(Application filed May 18 1898,)
(No Model.)
Nrrnn STATES ISOM A. GORDEN, OF BLUE MOUND, ILLINOIS.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,617, dated August 23, 1898.
Application filed May 18, 1898. Serial No. 681,066. (No model.)
To a, whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,ISOM A. GORDEN,a citizen of the United States, residing at Blue Mound, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in gates.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of that class of swinging gates which are centrally mounted on a swinging crane or frame and which are adapted to open in either direction, and to provide a simple, cheap, and durable hanger for the gate, and to enable the latter to be readily adjusted vertically, and at the same time prevent the gate from being lifted by hogs or other animals.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a gate constructed in accordance with this invention and shown partly open. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the hanger.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a swinging frame or crane hinged to a post 2 and comprising a vertical bar 3, a horizontal top bar 4, and an inclined bracing-bar 5, extending from the lower end of the vertical bar to the outer end of the horizontal bar and suitably secured to said parts. The horizontal bar extends slightly beyond the inclined brace 5, and the extended portion 6 is provided with a vertical perforation in which is arranged a vertically'adjustable rod or support 7 of a hanger 8.
The hanger 8, which supports a gate 9, is composed of the L-shaped rod or support 7 and a reversely-arranged L-shapedbar 10, having its terminals secured to those of the rod or support '7, whereby a vertical oblong frame or hanger is provided. The gate when closed is centrally supported by the hanger, and its ends are engaged by suitable keepers 17 and 18, located at opposite sides of a latchpost 19 and the vertical bar of the crane. The
vertical portion of the L-shaped rod or support, which is preferably constructed of two pieces of tubular metal connected at the angle by a coupling 11, forms a pintle for the gate, and its horizontal portion or arm passes through a perforation of the gate near the center thereof and forms a horizontal pivot to enable the gate to be readily lifted over an obstruction. I
The vertical or pintle portion of the support '7 is provided with a series of perforations 12, adapted to receive a pin 13, which passes through the hanger at a point above the horizontal bar 4 and rests thereon, whereby the gate is supported at any desired adjustment. In order to prevent the gate from being lifted and unlatched by hogs or other animals, the fastening device 13 is arranged between the bar 4 and a strap or bracket 15, secured to the upper face of the bar 4 and having an L- shaped arm or portion extending over the fastening device 13 and provided with a perforation receiving the vertical pintle portion of the hanger. The terminals of the support 7 of the hanger are threaded to receive nuts 16, and the ends of the L-shaped bar 10 are provided with perforations and are arranged on the ends of the support, being secured to the same by the saidnuts.
The invention has the following advantages: The oblong hanger, which supports the gate, is simple, inexpensive, and durable and is adapted to secure the gate at any desired adjustment and permit it to tilt and swing 011 the pintle portion, so that the gate may be opened in either direction by a person without necessitating his releasing the lines of a team and by walking only a few steps, as will be readily understood.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
That I claim is 1. The combination with a gate, and a swinging frame or crane, of a vertically-adjustable oblong hanger mounted on the frame or crane and receiving the gate, said hanger being composed of two reversely-arranged L-shaped portions, one of the L-shaped portions forming a vertical pintle and a horizontal pivot for the gate, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a gate, and aswinging frame or crane, of a hanger composed of the L-shaped support having its horizontal portion passing through and forming a pivot for the gate, the Vertical portion of the support being vertically adjustable in an opening of the frame or crane and provided With perforations;and-an-l=shaped bar connected at its ends to the terminals of the L-shaped support, a fastening device passing through one of the perforations of the support and ar ranged above the frame'or crane, and a
