SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,460, dated August 1, 1893.
Application filed May 9,1893. Serial No. 473,608. (No model.)
- ful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention relates to an improvement in gates.
The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gate embodying my invention, the lower section being open. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the lower section being closed, and Fig. 3 is a front detail view.
Referring to the drawings, A, A are fence posts, the gate being hinged to post A.
B is an upper section and O a lower section, the former consisting of two end pieces 1 and 2 to which are attached the rails 3, 4: and 5, the latter being extended at the free end of the gate to form an axle 6 on which is mounted a wheel D, revoluble on the axle and held in place by a spring-pin 7. The lower section 0 also has two end-pieces 8 and 9, to which are secured two rails 11 and 12, the end pieces being hinged to the end pieces of the upper section B by means of a pair of straps 13 bolted to the inner faces of the end pieces 8 and 9 and provided with bolt-holes at their upper ends, through which holes are passed bolts 14-,whichare also passed entirely through the end-pieces of the upper section and are secured at their outer ends by nuts in the usual manner. To the top rail 3 of the up per sectionis loosely attached a supportingrod E whose lower end is bent to form a hook 15 adapted to enter an eye bolt 16 secured to rail 12 of the lower section when the lower section is raised.
F is a lever pivotally attached to the outer face of the end piece 9, this lever being slotted near its center at 17 and provided witha pin-hole 18 near its upper end. Through the slot 17 is passed a bolt 19 havinga washer 20 resting against the side of the lever, the bolt being secured by a nut 21. On the bolt 19 is fulorumed the lever F. The upper end of the end piece I is provided with a pin-hole 22.
By unhooking the supporting-rod E from the eye bolt 16 the lowersection may be swung down either by its own weight or by means of the lever F, the latter assuming a vertical position when the lower section is closed, and thepin-hole 18 registeringwith the pin-hole 22. Through these holes the pin 23 maybe passed thus locking the lower section in its closed position. By Withdrawing the pin 23 the lever F may be pulled to raise the lower section, in which condition it is retained by inserting the supporting rod in the eye-bolt.
It will be understood that the upper section only is hinged to the gate-post A, as shown at 24:. The gate being carried at its free end bythe wheel maybe readily opened and cannot swag down. Any suitable form of'lock' may be employed to fasten the whole gate in its closed position.
As the lower section may be swung up at the time the whole gate is closed, hogs, sheep and such small animals may pass from one inclosure to another, and larger animals such as cattle and horsesmay be retained or confined to one inclosure.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a gate composed of an upper and lower section, of a wheel mounted on an axle formed on the projecting end of one of the rails of the upper section, substantially as described.
2. In a gate the combination, with an upper section, and a lower section pivoted" to the upper section, of araising lever pivotally attached to the lower section and provided with a central slot, a bolt passing through the slot and secured to the upper section, and means for holding the lever in its vertical position, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
