` UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
' DANIEL I. COBB, or YrsILANfrI, MICHIGAN.
GATE.
Application filed July 9, ls's."
To aZZwzom rt-may concern:
Be it known thatI, DANIEL I. COBB, of Ypsilanti, in the county of Washtenaw and vState of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, 'and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of swinging farm-gates; and the invention consists in the peculiar constructionof the gatehangings, in the peculiar constructionof devices for operating the gate, and in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed. A I
Figure lis a perspective view of my improved gate. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents the gate, which is provided with the. diagonal brace-rod B, the upper end of which project-s beyond the heel of the gate at the upper corner, and terminates in an eye, C, designed to engage with the hook or eye D of the brace' rod E, which passes through or over the top of the post F, and is secured to the'stake G. The lower corner of the heel of the gate is hung by means of the ordinary hook-and-eye hinge, H. By this manner of hanging the gate all strain is removed from the post, the latter merely serving as a standard over which the continuous brace formed by the rods B and E passes. At a convenient point near the gatepost is placed. astandard or post, I, upon the .top of which is secured a stelliform turn-table, J ,.from one arm of which risesa wristpin, K, which engages with a slot, It, in the extension-barL,'secured to the gate, as' shown. At right angles to the line of fencing or gate, and in line with the post I, are the posts M 45 M', upon which are pivotally secured Athe 1evers N N', from which suitable ropes o r'cables,
senin No. 171,069. (No modell O O', pass and are secured to the turn-table, as shown.
In practice, in approaching the gate the driver pushes upon the end of the lever N, 5o
which turnsupon its fulcrum, and by means of the connections named causes the gate to swing open. Having passed through the gate, the latter is closed by pushing upon the lever N. 55
It willbe observed that when the gate is Closed the wrist-pin K of the turn-table is at or about the longitudinal center of the slot in which it operates, and in a direct line with ,the pivotal point of the turn-table at rightan- 6o gles to the gate, so that when the gate is closed it is self-locked in such position that it can not be opened without first turning the turn table.
I am aware of the Patents Nos. 65,619 and 65 203,396, and make no claim to the construc-A tions shown therein as forming part of my invention.
What I claim asmy invention is- .1. The combination, with a swinginggate 7ol having the slotted bar L projecting rearwardly therefrom, of the turntable J, having a Wrist-pinengaging with said bar, and so arranged that when the gate is closed the line connecting said wrist-pill to the pivoted point 75 of the turn-table is at right allgles to the line of the gate.
2. The combination, with a farm-gate', of v the hinge-braces B E, the hinge-post F, and
the stake G, the slotted bar L, projecting rear- 8o wardly from the gate, the turntable J, engaging the slotted bar by its wrist-pin, the post I, supporting said turn-table, the posts M M', the horizontal levers N N', pivoted thereon, and the cables O O', connecting levers N N' 85 with the turn-table, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as set forth.
