CHARLES E. BAKER, OF BLOOMDALE, OHIO.
GATE.
SPECIFICATIONl forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,645, dated June 12, 1900.
Application ledMarch S, 1900. Serial No. 7,847. (No model.)
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomdale, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use-l ful Improvements in Gates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use Vthe same.
The invention relates to farm-gates of the class termed swinging? gates and constructed to be opened and closed in either direction-that is, from either side of the closed gate-and to be raised or lowered onits hingesupports to clear snow and ice or to permit small stock to pass beneath it, while at\ the same time preventing the passage'of horses and cattle until after thegate has been opened for said purpose.
With these and other desirable objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of the parts of the farm-gate, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings hereto annexed and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a farm-gate embodying the improvements of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the operating-lever, portions at the ends of the same being broken away, by which the gate is raised and lowered when desirable or necessary. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the bar 3, which is similar in construction to the bar 2, both of said bars 2 and 3 being adjustably connected with the pintle-rod B of the gate-hinges. Fig. 4is a horizontal sectional view taken through the hingepost.
Referring by numerals and letters to the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the hingepost of the farm-gate, 1a the latch-v post of the same, and lb the swinging gate, which latter is formed of parallel gate-rails connected at their ends by vertical bars and at their vertical middle line byavertical middle bar. In-
clined braces extend from the upper end of the vertical middle bar to the lower gate-rail at its junction with the vertical end bars of the swinging gate, and auxiliary braces b are employed to add stability to this part of the structure. At its upper end the middle bar of the swinging gate is provided with a straphook lO, which when operatively connected engages an eye 1S at the weight end of a lever 4, which latter is used to raise and lower the swing-frame when necessary.
2 and 3 are supporting-bars for the swinging gate. These bars 2 and 3 are connected at their meeting ends by the shank or stem of a depending hook 17, which latter engages an eye at the upper end of an eyebolt 9, se-
cured in saidA lever 4 a short distance to the p rear of said eye'lS of said lever 4. The supporting-bars 2 and 3 diverge rearwardly from their connected front ends and are provided at their ends with eyes G and 14, through which the pintle-rod B passes vertically downward and passes also through the alined halfhinges on the hinge-post and gate-frame. These eyes G and 14 are provided with 'setscrews 6 and 14, respectively, which are turned against the pintle-rod B to hold said swinging frame to its vertical adjustment upon said pintle-rod B. The lever 4 is provided a short distance in front of its rear end With a slot 5. A locking-collar 8 is mounted upon the pintle-rod B and is connected by a chain 8 with said lever 4, immediately below the slot 5 in said lever. When the attaching-chain is stretched taut and the weight'of the swinging gate-frame is exerted thereon, the collar holds the gate-frame suspended upon the pintle-rod B and the gate at` the desired vertical adjustment. The gateframe may be raised or lowered on its pintlerod by manipulating the lever 4 to move the gate-frame vertically and will be retained in its adjusted position by the collar 8. To obtain a greater range of adjustment, the set` screws in eyes 6 and 14 are used to lock the supporting-bars l2 and 3 upon pintle-rod B at the points to which said eyes 6 and 14 may have been adjusted.
In order to automatically swing the gate closed, a pulley 12 is provided, which is supported by a pulley-arm driven intol the hingepost, and over this pulley 12 is run a rope or wire which is provided at its lower end with a weight-11. The rope or Wire is also run over a small return-pulley 16, projecting from the corner of post 1, which protects the corner of the post 1 and also the wire or rope as it is drawn back and forth while swinging the gate open and closed.
13 13 are ordinary gate-latches, which engage keepers A A in the latch-post.
D is a stay-wire which is connected at one end to an eye at the upper end of the pintlerod B and is run rearwardly and downwardly and connected with a suitable anchor in the ground. It should be mentioned in this connection that the weight of the gate comes at its central portion and upon the lever 4 at its connection therewith.
The weight 11, pulley 12, dac., are employed in duplicate at opposite sides of the gate, as shown in Fig. 4, so that the gate can be closed automatically when it has been opened in either direction.
While I have described the gate as a farmbination with a hinge-post and the swinging l gate provided with alined half-hinges; the i pintle-rod connecting said half-hinges; the slotted lever 4 hinged to the upper end of the vertical middle bar of said swinging gate and gate, it is obvious that it is equally adapted for use as a yard-gate, and it can be operated by any child old enough to drive stock, as great strength or exertion is not required to operate it.
While I have described and illustrated my improved gate in the form best known to me, it is obvious that many changes might be made in the construction of the same without departing from the character ot' the invention, and I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described herein.
IIavin g thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a gate of the class described, the combination with the hinge-post provi-ded with half-hinges and a swinging gate provided with half-hinges alined with said` first-named hinges; the slotted lever 4 hingedtov the upper end of the central part of said swinging gate and provided with a loosely-attached locking-collar 8; the supporting-bars 2 and 3 connected at their front ends by a hook 17 engaging an eyebolt 9 in said slotted lever 4 and provided at their rear ends with eyes G and 14 respectively, the pintle-rod B passed vertically downward through said eye 6, the slot 5 in said lever 4, the 1ocking-'collar8, the eye 14 in said supporting-bar 3, and the upper and lower half-hinges on the hinge-post and said gate-frame; and the weighted cords or ropes passed over pulleys 12 supported by the hinge-post around return-pulleys 16 pro- ;-jecting from the front corners of said hingepost and connected to the rear vertical bars of said swinging gate, substantially as set forth.
2. In a gate of the class described, the comjaround return-pulleys 16 supported by said hinge-post and connected to the rear vertical bar of said swinging gate, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence o f two subscribing witnesses.
