Application filed Lctober 5, 1917.
T0 (/.Z whom, t may concern Be it known that I, SWAN O. l/VronLL, a citizen or the` United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State ci Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to gates especially adapted as a fence gate for farm usage, although equally Well adapted to serve as a gate or closure in other places.
In the present instance, I have aimed, primarily to provide a gate of simple and improved construction, characterized mainly by the provision of a novel form of hinge mounting and suspension means, by which tho gate is capable of being opened by either a sliding lengthwise movement as upon a trackway or by swinging movement similar to the ordinary hinge gate movement. This provision enables my improved gate t o be well adapted to practically any condition and requirement of usage which may arise.
A further object of my invention is to provide a gate mounting of the character described. constructed in a very simple, yet substantial manner so that the cost .of production will be comparatively low and the mounting will be practical and durable for the purpose desired.
The construction and operation of my improvements will be better understood and appreciated by reference to the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fence gate, closed, embodying my improvements; 'i Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the hinged end of the gate and showing in dotted lines the latter swung to an open position; and
Fig. 4 is a plan sectional view taken substantially on the line 1 -4 of Fig. 1.
While my improvements pertain essentially to the mounting of a gate, I have illustrated a preferred construction of the gate, per se, although in this connection, it should be noted that the gate might be suitably constructed as long as it may be adapted for use with my improved mounting. In the instance illustrated, xed gate posts A.

and l dene the sides of the passageway to be closed by the gate. The gate, designated generally by reference character 5, 1n
the present instance consists ot upper and lower rails 6 and 7 in the torni of ordinary metal pipes which are rigidly joined together by the end rails 8 and 9 and intermediate rail 11, suitable wire fabric or the like 12 :Forming the body of the gate. I prefer to rigidly secure the pipes 6 and 7 to the end rails S and 9 b v means of specially constructed brackets 13, which are shaped to receive bot-h the upright and horizontal rails, as shown, and are bolted thereto. The brackets 13 secured to the upright gate end 8, are provided with apertured extensions 14 adapted to engage the ordinary pintles of a gate post, in case it should be desired to use the gate on an ordinary hinge mounting.
The gate supporting means is designed so that the gate may be opened and closed either by sliding it lengthwise upon a trackway yor by swinging the gate upon a pintle or hinge mounting, or by opening it partially by both methods. The mounting includes a roller 15 upon which the upper rail or pipe 6 rests and is adapted to roll. This roller serves as a permanent means for suspending the gate, and the gate may be slid lengthwise thereon to the left, viewing Fig. 1, to an open position. The roller in turn is mounted so as to turn bodily ou an upright airis or pintle about which the gate may be swung horizontally, as upon a hinged mounting. rIhe mounting for the roller and the means for attachment thereof to the pintle or pivot bolt I have in the present instance formed in two parts, consisting generally of brackets 16 and 17, both embracing the sides oiC and rigidly secured to an upright bar or post 18, the bracket 16 being equipped with a stud 19 upon which the roller is revolubly mounted and the bracket 17 being equipped with a horizontal portion 21' pivotally connected by means of a pintel or pivot bolt 29. to a bracket 23 in turn txedly secured to the post A, said horizontal portion having an uprightportion 24 serving as an outer support for the stud 19 and as a guide to retain the roller in operative position on the stud. Thus, it will be seen that the roller is mounted so as to turn about an upright axis. The bar 18 connects the roller and hinge gate mounting just described with a lower hingeinountingcoaxial ivith the upper hinge and consisting` ot the hinge elements 25 and 2G connected b5' a pintle Q7 and respectivel)Y secured to the bail 1S and post The bar 18 serves to properlyY sustain the roller l5 and to hold it against displacement or tilting` nioveinent, by reason ot its loiver hinge connection, when the gate is being swung about the hinge mounting. 'The construction of the brackets 1G and 1T and the mounting` ot the supporting roller in the manner described permits he desired objects to be obtained in a verf." siinple and practical inanner and also enables a inounting' ot this character to be sold as an attachnient to be applied to anyv ordinary tence gate having an upper rail, Whether Wood or inetal, corresponding` to the top rail 6, Which should in this connection be. adapted to slide upon the roller. rllhe use of niv iinproveinents with the ordinary tarin gaV l will be obvious, since inost gates are provided `with a top rail adapted to slide on the roller mounting1 Which l have provided. Bv using invv improvements the gate is entireljv suspended troni the top rail and by reason of the mounting ot' the latter upon the roller in the inanner described the gate ina,vbe very easilj,v slid back and forth, and When opened in a balanced condition, which further facilitates moving; the gate. Thus, a quite heavy,Y gate inav be compara.- tivelj; easil;v opened by first sliding it lengthwise to a partially opened position in which the Weight ot the gate balanced on the roller support and then bv swinging' the gate on its hinged mountingl to fullv open the passag'evvav. Any suitable locking1 inoans, latch or the like, inight be eniploved at the free end et the gate to hold it in eennection 'with the post B When the gate is closed, and in the present instance, arins 28 secured to the end rail i) are adapted to L27/seca enter openings in the post B by lengthwise movement ot the gate.
lt is believed that the foregoing` conveys a clear understanding of the Construction and operation o' my ii'nprovenients, and it should be understood that While l have illustrated one Working embodiment thereet, changes in details ot construction and arrangement ot' parts inight be resorted to Without departing troni the spirit and scope ot' the invention as expressed in the appended claiin.
l claiin: 1
Means for mounting a sliding and sivingin` gate comprising in combination with a post and a gate having a horizontal slide rail, upper and lovver pintle brackets se cured to the post, an upright roller-hanger attached at its lovver end through the agency ot a. pintle to the lower pintle bracket, a bracket secured to the upper portion ot said roller-hanger having a horizontal portion resting' on the upper pintle bracket, a pint-le in aline-inentivith the loiver pintle and connecting said horizontal portion ot the hanger pintle bracket with the upper post pintle bracket, said horizont-al portion ot the hanger pintle bracket having its end adjacent to the post turned upwardly to provide a support for one end ot a roller supporting pin, a bracket secured to the roller hanger and provided vvith a horizontal roller pin disposed in substantiall;r vertical alineinent with and above the upper pintle and supported at its onte end in the upright portion ot the hanger pintle bracket, and a roller mounted on said pin betvveen the pin supporting; bracket and the upright portion of the pintle bracket and adapted to receive said horizontal rail of the gate so that the gate inay slide lengthwise on the roller and saving laterall)v about the axis of the pintles.
