v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 9, 1906.
Application filed February 20,1906. Serial No. 302,019.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. HAwN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Littleyork, in the county of Washington and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in gates.-
, The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of swinging gates, more especially the operating mechanism for opening and closing the same and the means for looking a gate, and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efiicient operating mechanism adapted to enable a gate to be readily opened and closed without dismounting from a horse or leaving a vehicle and capable of forming a lock for positively holding a gate in its open and closed positions.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gate provided with operating mechanism constructed in accordance with this invention, the gate being closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the gate being open. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view illustrating the construction of the combined gate actuating and locking brace.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a s 'nging gate connected at an intermediate point by hinges 2 to a hingepost 3 to provide a rear extension 4, with which is connected a combined gate actuating and locking brace. The gate in opening and closing swings to and from a post 5, it being shown closed in Fig. 1 with its free edge abutted against the said post 5, which is preferably provided with a vertical strip or cleat 6 to form a stop. The gate when open swings from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that illustrated in Fig. 2, and the said rear extension 4 is carried through one-fourth of a revolution to permit the combined actuating and locking brace to complete its movement and assume a horizontal position at each swinging movement of the ate. The combined gate actuating and loclnng brace consists of two members 7 and 8, connected together at the center by a hinge 9, which is provided with a centrally-arranged horizontally-disposed pintle 10. The member 7, which is connected at its end with the rearward extension of the gate by means of a hinge 11, consists of a straight bar or link, and the other member 8 is in the form of a lever, being composed of inner and outer arms. The outer end of the member 8 is connected by a hinge 12 with a rear support 13, and the inner arm 14 overlaps the member 7 and is arranged upon the upper face of the same to form a straight brace when the combined ate actuating and locking brace is in its 100 ed position. The inner or front portion of the member 8 is preferably recessed the length of the inner arm 14 to re ceive the inner or rear portion of the member 7, and the said arm 14 is provided at its end with a weight 15, which is adapted not only to assist the opening and closing movements of the gate, but which is also capable of firmly holding the members of the combined locking and actuating brace in their locking position. The weight prevents the members 7 and 8 from being accidentally thrown upward by any jar or vibration of the gate.
The joint gate actuating and locking brace is adapted to break at the center, the members 7 and 8 being swung upward by the operating mechanism hereinafter described during the first half of the opening and closing movements of the gate, and when the gate swings beyond the center of its movement the weight 15 will complete the movement of the gate and positively open or close the same. The momentum of the gate will carry it beyond the center, so that a positive operation of the gate is effected.
The hinge 11, which connects the combined actuating and locking brace with the gate, is composed of two leaves and a vertical connectingintle. One of the leaves of the hinge 11 is ed to the rear extension of the gate, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and the other leaf 16 is arranged in a slot 17 of the outer end of the member 7 and is pivoted to the same by a transverse bolt 18. The hinge 12 at the opposite end of the combined actuating and locking brace is constructed in a similar manner, being composed of two leaves which are connected by avertical pintle. One of the leaves is fixed to the rear support 13, and the other leaf 19 is pivoted in a slot 20 of the rear end of the member 8 by a transverse bolt 21. By this construction the outer ends of the members 7 and 8 are adapted to swing both vertically and horizontally, and when the members are swung upward they lessen the distance between the outer hinges 11 and 12 and thereby operate to swing the gate during the first portion of the opening and closing movements of the same. When the members 7 and 8 swing downward to a horizontal position, thedistance between the outer hinges is increased and the said members thereby operate to complete the opening and closing movements of the ate. The hinging of the gate at an interme iate point is a convenient means for providing a rear extension; but it will be clear that this particular form of extension is not essential to the operation of the invention, as the combined actuating and locln'ng brace will operate with various forms of extensions.
The arm 14 of the member 8 is connected with branches 22 and 23 of the operatingrope. The branch 22 extends upward from the arm 14 to an operating-lever 24, which is fulcrumed at an intermediate point on an upright 25. The operating-lever is arranged at a slight angle to the roadway, its inner end being connected to the said branch 22 of the operating-rope. The outer end of the operating-lever is provided with a short rope 26, to the lower end of which is secured a suitable grip or handle 27. The other branch 23 of the operating-rope extends upward from the arm 14 to a guide-pulley 28, which is supported by an inclined arm 29, extending from the rear support 13. The saidbranch 23 extends from the outer end of the arm 29 to a guide-pulley 30 and is provided at its outer end with a suitable grip or handle 31. The guide-pulley 30 is mounted on a post or upright 32, located beyond the gate when the latter is open, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Any other form of operating mechanism may be employed for swing- 5o ing the members 7 and 8 of the combined gate actuating and locking device. The arm 14 of the member 8 limits the downward swinging of the said members, and when the latter are in a horizontal position they form a positive lock for the gate and obviate the necessity of providing a latch for locking the gate. The rearward extension permits the members 7 and 8 of the combined gate-actuating and locking device to assume a horizontal alined position when the gate is at the limit of both its opening and closingmovements, so that the gate will be positively held in each position. This will prevent the gate after being opened from accidentally closing while a horse or vehicle is passing through the gateway.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a swinging gate provided with a rear extension, said gate being hinged at an intermediate point between its front end and the outer or rear end of the said extension, of a combined gate actuating and locking device consisting of two members hinged together and having a horizontal pintle at such point of connection, one of the members being provided at its inner end with an arm for engaging the other member to limit their downward movement, and outer hinges connecting the ends of the device with the rear extension of the gate and to a suitable support and provided with vertical and horizontal pintles for permitting the said members to swing both vertically and horizontally, the said rear extension of the gate permitting the members of the said device to swing to their alinedor locking position at the end of both the opening and closing movements of the gate.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CLARENCE E. HAWN.
