Be it known that I, JOHN lV.lVOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at llawarden, in the county of Sioux and State of Iowa have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extensible Clothes-Line Props; and Ido hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in extensible props or poles for clothes-lines; and the object is to provide a prop of this character which is simple in construction and substantial'and adapted to be readily and conveniently adjusted to support the line at the desired elevation.

\Vith this and other objects in View my i11- vention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an adj ustablepole or prop constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same, with parts broken away to expose the guide-pin on one member and the cooperating guide-slot in the other member. Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of the adjustable member.

Like letters of reference designate corre sponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.

Referring now more particularly to said drawings, A represents the fixed member, and B the adjustable member, of my improved clothes-line prop or pole. The lower end of the fixed member is preferably anchored or embedded in the ground, but may rise from any suitable fixed foundation. The adjustable member 13 is provided with a longitudinal slot 0, located adjacent to and parallel with one of its sides and extending from a point about midway of its length to near the upper end thereof, as shown. Projecting through thisslot is aguide pin d, which is rigidly secured to the fixed member A and provided at its outer end with a head and a washer d which brid es the said slot and thereby prevents the adjustable member from working off. The said adjustable member is adapted to slide longitudinally on said pin to the extent of the length of the slot 0, and is also adapted to swing outwardly on said pin, in the manner hereinafter described. A series of inclined slots e are provided in the opposite side of the adjustable member, and extend from a point aboutmidway of the length of said member to the lower end thereof. The walls produced by the removal of the material to form the slots are parallel and formed at their inner ends with nearly circular recesses or seats, which are adapted to receive the'shank of a locking-pin f, projecting from the fixed member, the construction being such that the adj ustable member may be swung laterally in one direction and then adjusted vertically to bring either one of its slots into engagement with said pin, whereby the pole or prop may be lengthened or shortened as desired to hold the clothesline at the elevation desired. The adjustable member is provided at its upper end with a transverse clamping block or cleat h, which is suitably secured thereto and serves to clamp the shank of the spiral loop or eye 1', through which the clothes-line r is passed. It is also provided at its lower end with a transverse cleat Z, by means of which it may be readily and conveniently swung laterally and adj usted vertically by the operator. On one side of the fixed member A is a pivoted latch device consisting, in the present instance, of a turn-button m, which is designed to be turned into the path of the adjustable member to hold said member in vertical position and prevent it from being accidentally swung laterally and disengaged from the locking-pin f.

The operation is as follows: The clothesline, as before stated, passes through the loop or eyed and may be raised or lowered as desired by adjusting the movable member When it is desired to adjust said member, the turn-button m is moved out of the path of the member and the latter swung laterally to withdraw the particular slot which is engaged with the locking-pin out of engagement therewith,and is then moved upwardly or downwardly, as the case maybe, to raise or lower the line. The particular slot which is coincident with the pin after such adjustment has been made is then engaged with the pin and the turn-button again moved into the path of the adjustable member to'prevent the same from accidentally swinging on the guidepm.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,

the construction and mode of operation of my invention will be readily understood, and it will be seen that it provides an adjustable prop or pole which is simple in construction, substantial, and adapted to be readily and conveniently adjusted to support the line at any elevation desired.

Of course it will be understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An adjustable clothes-line prop or pole, comprising in its construction a fixed member carrying a guide-pin and a locking-pin, an adjustable member having a linesupport and provided with a longitudinal guide-slot through which said guide-pin projects and with a series of locking-slots adapted to engage said locking-pin, and a latch device 011 the fixed member adapted to engage said movable member, substantially as described.

2. An extensible clothes-line prop or pole, comprising in its construction a fixedmember carrying adjacent to its upper end a guidepin and below the same a locking-pin, an adjustable member having at its upper end a loop or guide for the line and provided at one side with a longitudinal guide-slot through which said guide-pin pr0jects,-whereby the adjustable member is adapted to swing laterally and slide longitudinally on said pin, and a series of locking-slots in its opposite side edge adapted to engage the said lockingpin, and a turn-button on the fixed member adapted to be brought into the path of movement of the adjustable member to hold the slot of the latter in engagement with the locking-pin, substantially as described.
