JAR-CLOSURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,475, dated August 2, 1898. Application filed February 12, 1898. Serial No. 670,092. (No model.)
and a bail or spring-holder for securing the I cap to the jar.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved cap or cover of novel and peculiar construction and a spring-holder for the cap of special shape to coact with the said cap, whereby the latter is secured to a jar, and certain portions of the cap keep the holder in position on the cap and prevent accidental displacement of the bail or holder.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement, as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out in the specification and set up in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, Figure l is an elevation of a jar provided with my improved top and bail. Fig. 2 is a top view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cap. Fig. 4is a perspective view of the spring-bail. Fig. isl a top view of a modified form of cap and The same numeral references denote the same parts throughout the several figures of the drawings. v
The neck 1 of the jar 2 is provided with an upwardly and outwardly flaring mouth 3, and
the remainder of the jar is of the usual ordinary shape or construction.
The jar cap or cover-4 has a depending conical stopper portion 5,which fits the j ar-mouth 3, and aflange overlapping the top edge of the mouth to hold a gasket 7 between the said flange and mouth edge.
The top of the cap or cover 4 is provided with three conveXed V-shaped lugs or proj ections 7 and 8, the latter two of which are in the same plane or line with each other with an interval or space between them and the other one being offset from the said two toward the edge of the cap and opposite said space or interval. three lugs is nearest the edge of the cap, with the wider or broadened portions inwardly or toward each other.
The bail or cap-holder is composed of a single piece of stiff wire and consists of the long arms 9, terminating at one end in a short loop or bend 10 and at the other end in two loops or bends 11, from which the short arms 6 eX- tend in the same plane with the said long arms to within about half the length of the latter, where said short arms terminate in rightangled wings 12, thus completing a W-shaped bail. From the wings 12 the ends of the wire are bent downwardly and inwardlyto form fingers 10, which conform with and hug closely the exterior of the flaring mouth 3 when in position upon the jar-cap, and in such position the loops l0 and 11 engage the small or contracted portion of the lugs 7 and 8, respectively, and the long arms engage the sides of the lug 7 and the inner sides of the lugs 8, while the short arms engage the outer sides of the lugs 8. Thus the cap is held to the jar and the bail to the cap until it is purpose'ly removed. Owing to the peculiar construction and arrangement of the lugs the The narrow portion of all bail may be expeditiously and conveniently applied or removed by pressing the fingers 10 either backward or forward.
In the modification shown by Fig. 5 the cap 14 has but two lugs 15 and the bail has two additional loops 16 and 17, which produce a greater spring in the bail.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the bail, of the cap or cover having upon its top surface arched lugs, two of which are in the same line and out of the central line of the cap, and one of which is out of the plane of the said two lugs lug 0n the cap offset from the said two lugs in the eentrailine of the cap, all of said lugs adapted to be engaged by the baihas set forth.
The combination with the cap or cover having V-shaped arched lugs, one of which is out of the line of the others, and the small or contracted portion of each lug being nearest the edge of said cap, of the bail having loops to engage said contracted portions, arms to engage the sides of each lug, wings engaging 10 the cap edge, and depending fingers from the said wings as set forth.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
