HAT PIN.
No.564,364. Patented Ju1y'21,1a96.-
WITNESSES: INVENTOH A "mm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MALLEY H. COLTHARP, OF TALLULAH, LOUISIANA.
HAT-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,364, dated July 21, 1896.
Application filed January 31, 1896. Serial No. 577,498. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MALLEY H. CoL'rHAEP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Tallulah, in the parish of Madison and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to hat-pins and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is provided with means for retaining it in a hat and for preventing its accidental removal.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification,of which the accompanying drawing forms apart, said drawing being a side elevation of my improved hat-pin and showing the head thereof in section.
In the practice of my invention I provide a pin A, which is composed of wire, one end of which is bent to form a side projection B, and to the bent portion or to the loop formed thereby is secured a head 0, which may-be of any desired form and composed of any desired material. The side projection B constitutes a supplemental prong, at the end of which adjacent to the head 0 is formed a loop I), and the point of the supplemental prong B projects outwardly from the loop I) and at an angle to the main portion of the pin A, as shown at b In operation, or in applying my improved pin to a hat so as to secure the same to the head, the pin A is inserted into the hat and into the hair in the usual manner, and in this operation the point 19 of the supplemental prong B is bent down-even with the pin A, and will also be forced into the hat through the same hole or opening, and when the loop b thereof reaches the side of the hat the outer side thereof will pass through the same opening and the supplemental prong B will spring up until the bottom of the loop rests in said hole or opening, and said supplemental prong will, when in this position, securely hold the pin in place and prevent the accidental removal or loss thereof. This operation will be readily understood by those familiar with this class of devices, and it will be apparent that the loop I) in the supplemental prong B may be of any desired shape or form, and my invention is not limited to the material of which the pin is composed; and it is evident that changes in the construction herein described and modification thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture a hat-pin, substantially as herein shown and described consisting of a main portion or pin A one end of which is bent to form a supplemental spring B which extends obliquely to the pin A and has a bent or curved portion 7) and a head 0 secured to the said pin A and supplemental spring B at the point of junction whereby when the same are in position the supplemental spring will engage the hat to lock the pin as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my inventionI have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 23d day of January, 1896.
