Be it knownthat I, PETER DEVLIN, a citizen cf the United States, residing at Baltimore,
in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stopper-Fasteni'ngs; and I do hereby declare the following to be af ull clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othf ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to im p'rovements in stopperfasteners for bottles, jars, and the like; and it consists in the novel device hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein the same parts are indicated by the same letters throughout the several views.
Figure l represents an elevation of a bottleneck fitted with one form ot' myimproved stop-v a disk of thin metal'having opposite lugs A',
provided with openings a near their ends. The disk and its integral lugs A' are preferably stamped from a sheet or strip of metal, the said disk being given the forni of a shallow'cap to fit over the upper end of the stopper B. The length of the lugs A' depends upon the depth of the usual boss C upon the mouth of the bottle-neck O', the openings a in said lugs being so located that when the cap or disk A is fitted upon the stopper, the latter being seated in the bottle-neck C' and the said lugs bent down along the exterior surface of the bottle-neck, said openings will lie opposite the usual contraction c at the base of the boss C, as shown. In this position'the said lugs may be engaged for locking the fastener by a band of wire D encircling the neck of the bottle at the base of the boss O. This band of wire is provided with a tongue cl at one side, formed by bending a short portion of the wire strip back upon itself, as seen in Fig. 2. After encircling the bottle-neck the ends of this Wire strip are brought together upon the opposite side from the tongue d and a similar tongue d' is formed, the said tongues extending radially from opposite points on the surface of the bottle-neck. -The tongues d and CZ so formed may engage in the open ings a of the lugs A', the said tongues being afterward bent downward to retain the said lugs, as seen in Figs. l, 2, 3, and 6 of the drawings. y
Instead of a wire band D a band of sheet metal, such as shown at- E in Figs. 4 and 5, may be used, the said band being applied in the same manner; but the tongues e and e thereof for engaging the lugs A of the cap are iiattened or spread to secure the same, as seen in Fig. 5. l
The cap or disk may be solid, as seen in Figs. l to 4 at A, or may be made of an annular form with a central opening, as shown at A0 in Figs. 6 and 7, to admit a corkscrew, or, if preferred, for any other reason.
The solid caps A may conveniently have some distinctive mark indicative of the nature of the contents of the vessel or the manufacturers mark stamped thereon if desired. Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent of the United States, is,`
1. In a stopper-fastener, the combination with a disk to fit upon the stopper, provided 'with radially-disposed flexible lugs having openings therethrough; of a separate metallic strip to encircle the bottleneck, having tongues formed by lapping portions thereof, arranged to engage the openings in said lugs,- substantially as described.
2. In a stopper-fastener, the combination with a disk to fit upon the stopper, provided With oppositely-disposed -iieXible lugs having openings therethroughgrof a band to encircle the bottle-neck composed of a bent metallic strip having tongues formed by lapping portions thereof, said tongues being arrangedto engage the openings in said .lugs when the parts are applied to the bottle, substantially as described.
