NlTED STATES EDITH MARGARET MARY MAOKAY, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM LORD BALLIN HINDE, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
HAlR-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 607,604, dated July 19, 1898.
' Application filed December 19, 1896. Serial No. 616,292. (No model.) Patented in England March 11, 1896,110. 5,530; inI'ranoe June 25, 1896.110. 257,567, and in Belgium June 26, 1896,11'0. 122,256.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDITH MARGARET MARY MACKAY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for the Hair, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, the said improvements being embraced in Letters Patent of GreatBritain, Ho. 5,530,dated March 11,1896; Letters Patent of France, No. 257,567, dated June 25, 1896, and Letters Patent of Belgium, No. 122,256, dated June 26, 1896.
This invention relates to fasteners for the hair, the purpose of which is to secure the same in a single compact bunch in order that the same may be thereafter twisted and made up into any fanciful arrangement and secured as an ornamental decoration of the head.
The present invention, briefly stated, consists in a fastener composed of a band of flexible material for embracing the hair, one end of said band being provided with a bent hook adapted to enter the hair and in rear thereof with one member of an interlocking device, and the other end of the band being provided with the other member of said interlocking device, these two members interlocking and thus securing together the two ends of the band.
The preferred construction of this fastener is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 illustrates the same by a perspective view as it is constructed and put upon the market. Fig. 2 illustrates the rear View of a female figure having this improved fastener applied to the hair to hold the same in a compact roll or bunch. Fig. 3 is a sectional View of a bunched roll of hair having this improved fastener applied thereto and holding the same in compact form.
The fastener consists of a narrow band a, preferably elastic, having a stilf hook I) attachedto its one end, together with a button or stud c, affixed thereto, and at the other end provided with a ring, as cl. Any means may be used for securing the hook to the band, as the slot shown, through which the band is passed and fastened. The band might carry the button 0 near the hook I); but preferably this button a will be riveted to said hook. Although a metallic hook is desirable because of its cheapness of structure, still one made of any suitable rigid material may be used. The ring 01 operates as a buttonhole and is to be of metal or similar rigid material, and for convenience of manipulation may be provided with'a tab 6; but this tab is not essential, and the buttonhole may be formed in the web of the band in an ordinary manner, if desired.
In using this improved fastener the hook may be of suitable dimensions to hook around the bunched mass of hair or hooked therein, as shown in Fig. 3, and the band is passed around the bunched hair one or more times, according to its size, and then has its ring (1 or buttonhole passed over the button or stud c, whereupon the bunched hair will be embraced and held by the band close to the back of the head of the user and enable the bunched hair it sustains to be thereafter twisted and laid in fanciful form against the head of the user, where it is secured in the ordinary way by hair-pins.
Having now particularly described the nature of the said invention and the manner of its use, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fastener for the hair consisting of a flexible band provided at one end with an inwardly-bent hook adapted to enter and grasp the hair and, in rear of the inwardly-bent portion of said hook, with one member of an interlocking fastening device for connecting the ends of the band, and at its other end with the other member of said fastening device, substantially as described.
2. The improved hair-fastener consisting of the flexible band a, hook 1), button 0 and ring d, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDI"1I MARGARET MARY MAOKAY.
