EDWARD IV. RISBROUGH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPlNNlNG -TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 607,552, dated July 19 1898. Application filed June 29, 1897- Serial No. 642,854. (N0 model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that LEDWARD W. RIsBRoUeH, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spinning-Tops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a top adapted to be spun by means of a cord wound around the ribbed or ridged body of the top and at the upper portion provided with a dial consisting of numerals arranged around the same, and the head of the top countersunk to form a circular channel or way, provided in the middle with a truncated cone-shaped device detachably fitted into the top, and pivotally supported therefrom is a reversely-bent wing or blade pointer or finger arranged so as to readily revolve by air-currents created in the act of spinning the top in the manner explained, whereby when the top comes to rest the bent wing or blade pointer or index finger will come to or rest opposite one of the numerals of the top to indicate thereby the gains or losses of each person participating in the game of spinning the top for amusement or pastime.
The principal object of my present invention is to provide a simple, durable, readilyassembled, and easily-manipulated spinningtop in which rivalry can be created in the spinning of the same through the employment of numerals impressed into or onto the top and the employment of a pointer or indexfinger in connection therewith and actuated by air-currents in the act of the spinning of the same for amusement or pleasure between competing participants in the game.
My invention, stated in general terms, consists of a game spinning-top when constructed and the parts of the same are arranged for being assembled, as hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and characteristic features of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a spin ning top embodying the characteristic features of my present invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of said top; and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through a broken section of the top, showing in the upper portion characteristic features in detail of my said invention.
Referring to the drawings, A represents an ordinary taperingsurfaced top provided at the base With a threaded plug a, fitted into the body ofthe top and having a tapering spinning-point a. The tapering or beveled surface of the top is ribbed or ridged at a. for permitting of the winding of a cord around said surface of the top, so that the top may be readily spun by certain manipulations of the cord in connection with the top A. Around the upper curved orbeveled -ofl:' surface of the top is provided a series of numerals Z)for eX- ample, from O to 9, inclusive-as illustrated, impressed into or onto the same. The top of the device A is hollowed out or countersunk to form a circular channel or Way 0, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1, and in the center of which is mounted and held to place by a headed and partially-threadedbolt or pin 6 a truncated cone-shaped device d, and mounted thereon is a reversely-bent Wing or blade pointer or index-finger f, which is free to revolve in connection with the bolt or pin 6, inserted through the detachable device cl into the countersunk head 0 of the top A.
In the spinning of the top the reverselybent blade-pointer or finger f, influenced by air-currents created by the act of spinning, owing to the shape'and position of the finger or pointer, will resist tendency to rotation induced by the spinning of the top, and thus remain apparently stationary, but, in fact, changing position in the spinning, so that thereby is created a rivalry on the part of those participating in the sport or game of top-spinning and enabling the game to be played so that gains and losses therein may be recorded by the pointer or finger showing up opposite to a certain numeral of the series of the top each time the same comes to rest.
Having-thus described the nature and'objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A spinning-top having a pointed base, said top adapted to be spun by a cord wound around the ribbed or ridged tapering body of the same, numerals impressed into or onto the beveled upper portion of the top adjacent to a countersunk head forming a circular channel or way, Within which is provided a truncated cone-shaped device carrying a rotatable reversely-bent Wing or blade pointer or finger held to place by a bolt or pin extending through the same and said device into the top-body and said finger or pointer actu-
