SUPPORT FOR FEED-BAGS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 607,449, dated July 19, 1898.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, TIMOTHY MULcAHY, of New York, (Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Support for Feed-Bags and Like Receptacles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a device adapted for immediate attachment to and convenient disengagement from the forward ends of vehicle shafts or thills, which attachment will be so constructed that a feedbag may be held within convenient reach of the animal in the shafts,and whereby a pail of water may be supported in a manner to make it accessible to said animal, and whereby the support for the feed-bag or other receptacle adapted to be contained therein may be adjusted so that the article supported may be brought within proper reach of the animal harnessed,whether the shafts or thills be long or short.

Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment to vehicle-shafts of the character above set forth which will be light, durable, and capable of easy manipulation and which when not required will occupy but a minimum of space and if necessary may be placed in the feed-bag.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the device attached to the shafts of a vehicle; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device and a portion of one member of the vehicle-shafts, showing in dotted lines the manner in which afeed-bag or a pail may be carried by the attachment.

Two arms A and B are employethwhich are preferably made to converge at their outer ends, and at the rear end of each of said arms a socket 10 is formed of such character that each of the sockets may receive a forward end portion of a member of the vehicle-shafts. The forward end of each arm A and B is shown flattened, and this portion of each arm Serial No. 647,417. (No model.)

The holder 14 is provided at opposite sides with lugs 15, which extend over the slotted portions of the arms A and B, and these lugs 15 receive set-screws 16, through the medium of which the support 14;, which is of a ringlike character, may be adjusted on the arms A and B and held in adjusted position. Set screws 12 or their equivalents are also provided for the socket 10 of each arm A and B for the pupose of securing .the arms A and B to the shafts. Under such a construction it is obvious that a feed-bag or a water-pail may be conveniently supported from the shafts and be accessible to the harnessed animal, in a great measure preventing the waste of material owing to the tendency of the horse to toss his head while feeding. This attachment to the shafts also obviates the suspension of a feed-bag from the head or neck of the animal, which method of using the feed-bag is very common and tends largely to spilling of the feed and is an inconvenience to the animal feeding.

It may be noted that when the device is to be used in connection with a double team, and therefore is to be attached to a pole, asingle arm only need be employed, and the said arm may be made to carry two holders 14 instead of but one, as illustrated, and such adaptation of the device is contemplated.

Many horses have a habit of throwing the head down to the knees. If so, the opposing arms A and B, as shown in positive lines in Fig. 1, will afford too ample a space between the breast of the animal and the support for the feed-bag, and while the animal by shortening up the body could pass the head downward the head would not be raised without interfering with the support, as the latter would not be visible to the aminal. Therefore the arms A and 15 are preferably crossed, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1,"compelling the animal when reaching downward to do so at the sides of the device,permitting the head to be raised without serious interruption.

Having thus described my invenvion, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A support for feed-bags and for analogous purposes, consisting of an arm formed at one end with a socket, the opposite end of said arm being flattened in a horizontal plane and formed with a vertical longitudinal slot, a fastening device for securing the socket end of said arm to a pole or shaft, a holder for a feed-bag, pail or similar receptacle, the said holder being ring-shaped and provided with a projecting lug adapted to extend over the flattened slotted portion of the arm, and means for adj ustably securing said lug to the slotted portion of the arm, for the purpose set forth.

2. A support for feed-bags and for analogous purposes, comprising arms each formed at its rear end with a socket and having its forward end flattened in a horizontal plane, the said forward end being provided with a Vertical longitudinal slot, means for secnrin g the socketed portions of the arms to the shafts of a vehicle, and a holder for a feed-bag, pail or similar receptacle, the said holder being ring-shaped and provided at opposite sides with projecting lugs adapted to extend over the flattened slotted portions of the respective arms, the said lugs being constructed to receive set-screws for adjustably securing the holder to the arms, substantially as specified.
