This invention relates to an improvement in padlocks of that class which are self-locking, the object being to produce a simple lock in which b'oth ends of the shackle are locked when the shackle is in its closed position; and it consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims. y

The case of the lock consists of a body A and cap B, which may be of any desired shape, here represented as circular'. The body and cap are connected together by rivets or posts a b c d, more or less in Vnumber. Y Upon the post b the shackle C is pivoted, and the.

shackle is constructed at its pivot end with an inwardly-extending locking-lug D and at its opposite end or nose with a locking-notch E. vVithin thel case and turning upon the key-hub F is' a locking-guard G, formed at one side with an arm H, which is raised for engagement withv the'locking-lug D of the shackle, and at theopposite sides with an arm I, which is also raised to pass over a'tumbler J, which is mounted on the post a.. In the arm I is a stud K, which passes into an inclined slotL in the said tumbler and so that as the locking-guard `is turned the tumbler' will be moved from left to right. I-I of the locking-guard is-a spring N, which extends beneath the flange M and into the path of the nose of the shackle and so that when the shackle is released the spring will tend to throw the nose of the shackle out of the case.

In opening the lock the key bears against the lower edge of thearm I and lifts the same, which forces the stud K upward, thereby moving the iiange' M at the upper end of the tumbler out of engagement with the notch E of the shackle. At thesame time the rotation of the locking-guard releases the locking-lug at the pivot end of the shackle Iand so that the shackle is free to be thrown open under the action of the spring N, and the said locking-lug passing over the upper edge of the arm H of the locking-guard prevents the re- As the shackle is turned in closing, the locking-lug passes beyond the end of the arm Hof the locking-guard, which 'is raised under pressure of the spring N,which is forced downward by the nose of the shackle. It is apparent without further illustration or description. that the stud K might be mounted in the tumbler J, and a Vslot formed in the arm I, and so thatthe tumbler would be operated in the same way as above described, or the stud might beformed in the extreme end ofthe arm,'so as to engage with the outer edge of the tumbler J, which would be soformed as to cause the tumbler to be moved inward as the arm lis raised and as shown i'nvFig. 7. I therefore do not wish to be understood as limiting' the invention to the exact form of parts shown. A springlock in which the shackle is held at opposite ends is thus produced with a very small number of parts and at a correspondingly low cost for manufacture.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

.1. In a padlock, the combination withfthe case, of a shackle pivoted therein, said shackle provided at its pivot end with a locking-lug IOO and at its nose with a` locking-notch, a tumbler also pivoted iu the Said ease and adapted to engage with the nose of the shackle, and a loclzing-guard pirotally mounted in the ease and adapted to be turned by the key and formed with two oppositely-extending arms, one of which is engaged by the locking-lugr of the shackle and the other coupled with said tumbler for moving it', Substantially as described.

2. In a padlock, the combination with the case, ofa shackle pivoted therein, said shackle provided at its pivot end with a locking-lug and at its nose with a loekingniotch, a tumbler also piroted in said case and adapted to engage with the nose ol the shackle, and a locking-guard pivotally mounted on the keyhub and so as to be turned by the key and formed with two opposit'el)f-extendingr arms, one of which is engaged by the locking-lug` of the shackle and the other end projecting over said tumbler with which it is coupled, Substantially as described.

il. ln a padlock the combination with the case thereof, of a shackle pivoted in the case and provided at its pivot end with a lockinglue,` and at its nose with a locking-notch, oi a tumbler also pivoted in Said ease, and formed with a llange at its upper end for engagement with the locking-notch in the shackle, and with an inclined slot, a locking-guard also mountedin the case for movement by the key, said guard formed at opposite Sides with arms one of which is adapted to engage with the locking-lug and the other provided with a stud to engage the inclined Slot in the tunibler, and aspring, the tendency of which is to hold the locking-guard in its normal position, substantially as described.
