SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 47 8,850, dated July 12, 1892. Application filed February 20; 1892. Serial No. 422,194. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, EDWARD T. FRAIM, a citizen of the United States, residing in Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relatesto improvements in that class of padlocks in which the fast limb of the shackle is pivoted in the case and the swinging limb locked therein by engagement with the leaves of a V-shaped spring; and it consistsin the construction and combination of the various parts, as hereinafter fully described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective face view of the lock, the closingplate of the case being removed and the swinging limb of the shackle locked therein; Fig. 2, a face view of the lock, the closingplate being removed and the swinging limb disengaged from the case; and Fig. 3, a perspective view of the inner face of the closingplate.

Referring to the details of the drawings, A indicates a rectangular case having openings in the top plate, through which the limbs of the shackle pass. Rivet-pins a, a, and a are formed in the case, which are adapted to engage corresponding perforations 7c and 7c of the closing-plate H. The limb b of the fast end of the shackle B is pivoted on the pin a, the side plate adjacent thereto being cut away to permit the end of the limb b to rotate freely about the pin.

Upon the swinging limb b of the shackle there is formed a reduced extension, in opposite sides of which there are formed recesses 50 from beneath the opening in the top plate through which the reduced end of the limb 1) passes bya lug f formed on the back plate and on which the end of the limbb rests, and by the rounded extension b on the end of said limb. To retain it in its position up against the top plate, there is a stud f formed on the back plate next to the head of the spring and a transverse rib 61 located across the center of said plate in line with stud f, the rib ha"- ing a winged recess, which, with a corresponding recess in a rib h, located on the face of the closing-plate and adapted to register with therib (1, forms a Winged keyhole, through which the key passes to engage between the leaves of the spring. Posts (1 below the rib d serve to guide the key to the opening formed by the recesses in ribs 01 and h.

A barrel G rests in a winged keyhole in the bottom plate of the case and a similar opening formed by recesses in ribs g and K, located, respectively, on the back and closing plates. This barrel is slotted horizontally, as is usual and as shown in Fig. 1, and is held in place by a boss g, formed thereon, which rests between the bottom plate and the ribs 9' and K.

Beneath the opening through which the swinging limb of the shackle B is inserted in the case there is a vertically-acting plunger E, having an enlarged head 6 and heel e, from which latter there is a tenon e extend ing downward, and around this tenon there is coiled a spring F, having its lower end resting on the bottom plate and its upper against the heel e. The plunger is held in a vertical position and guided in its movements by the rib and post f. When the swinging limb is in position in the case, the leaves of spring D are engaged in the recesses b the plunger E being forced downward so as to compress the coiled spring F, as shown in Fig. 1. To disengage the leaves of spring D from the recesses b the key is inserted through the barrel G and the keyhole formed by the ribs d and h until the heel thereof enters the recess a in the top plate, when the key is turned so that the wards on opposite sides thereof force said leaves clear of the recesses b When this is done, the plunger E, actuated by spring F, thrusts the limb I) out of the case, and the head e of said plunger passes between the leaves of spring D, as shown in Fig. 2, and holds them apart to receive the limb b, when it is again pushed into the case.

In addition to the parts already mentioned as being located on the closing-plate H there are filling-blocks 2' 't' formed thereon, adapted to close the spaces between the ad joinin gfaces of the limbs of the shackle and the edges of the side and top plates of the case, and a stud j, which registers with the head of the plunger when in its retracted position to aid in guiding it between the leaves of spring D. There is also a rib 71' on the closing-plate, adapted to engage notches in the key as it is revolved in the bearings, the position of which varies in diiferent looks, as does that of the corresponding notches in the key.

I am aware that the use of a V-shaped spring extending across the case to hold or look a vertically-acting shackle therein is common. I therefore do not claim the combination of sucha spring with the case and shackle, broadly; but

Vhat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a padlock, the combination, with a shackle having one limb pivoted in the case, of a flat spring extending across the case 0011- tiguous to the top plate thereof and constructed to cngagethe swinginglimb of the shackle and secure it in the case, a rib to hold said spring up against the top plate, and a springactuated plunger adapted to force the swing ing limb from the case and hold said fiat spring in position to again engage the swinging limb, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a padlock, the combination, with a shackle, of one limb thereof pivoted in the case and having a rounded extension a lug formed on the back plate beneath the pivoted limb, a V-shapcd spring extending across the case contiguous to the top plate and having its leaves constructed to engage recesses 1n the swinging limb of the shackle, ribs on the back and closing plates, registering w1th each other to hold said spring up againstthe top plate and having winged recesses 1n their contacting edges, and a spring-actuated plunger adapted to force the swinging limb from the case and hold the leaves of the V-shaped spring open in position to again engage the recesses in the swinging limb, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. In a padlock, the combination, with a shackle and a case having a recess a in the top plate thereof, of one limb of the shackle pivoted in the case and having a rounded extension, a V-shaped spring extending across the case contiguous to the top plate and having its leaves constructed to engage recesses in the swinging limb of the shackle, ribs on the back and closing plates, registering with each other to hold said spring up against the top plate and having winged recessesin their contacting edges, a plunger having a head adapted to engage the end of the swinginglimb and a heel with a tenon formed thereon, a spring coiled about the tenon, a rib and post to support and guide the stem of the plunger, and a stud registering with the head of the plunger when in its retracted position, substantially as and for the'purpose specified.
