ythe county of Lancaster `and State` of Fennsylvania, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates lto Ypadlocks, and more particularly to that class inwhich the shackle has no spring directly attached ,thereto for openingthe same, when released by the locking mechanism.
The object of the invention is to provide a Y lock of this class that shall be simple, durable, and positive, containing few parts, and depending for its action more on the positive action of levers than upon the action of springs.
Vith these and other objects in view, our invention consists in certain construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed in the anneXed specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views; but it is fully understood that while we have here described our device as shown, that we do not confine ourselves to the exact design, as slight changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1, is a front view of the lock with the front half of the casing removed, showing the mechanism in a locked position. Fig. 2, is a similar view, showing the mechanism in an unlocked position, and the shackle in the iirst stage of opening. Fig. 3, is a similar view showing the mechanism in an unlocked position, and the shackle in its last stage of opening. Fig. 4, is a sectional view on the line X-X of Fig. 1. Fig. 5, is a sectional view on the line Y-Y of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, the usual casing is shown comprising the two parts 1, and 2, which are held together by the parts 3, 4, 5, and 6; the casing also being provided with the cut out portions 7, and 8, for the shackle 9, which is pivoted on the post 4,
and formed with a latch-receiving eye 10,
and altoe 11, formed'on the heel or hub i12.
`VIthln the casing is mounted a key-operated shackle ejecting link 13, or ice breaker, which is pivoted at one end upon a post G, and formed at Aits free end with a nose 141, forraisinglthe eye 10, of the shackle 9. Pivoted upon the same post 6, is a lever 15, which is formed with a key-actuated arm 16and a heel-engaging arm 17 ,i and which is ,retained in a rnormally lowered position by the spring 18, which bears against the sidewall ofthe casing. f'
.When the mechanism is in a locked position as shown in Fig. 1, the arm 17, engages the front surface of the toe 11, and as the point of contact is to the rear of the center line of the posts el, and 6, the shackle 9, is`
locked in a positive manner.
The nose engaging lever 19, is pivoted upon the post 5, and is formed with a key actuated arm 20, and a nose engaging arm 21, said lever 19 being normally held in a locked position by the coil spring 22, which is mounted on the post 23, with its short arm bearing against the casing and its long arm bearing against the upper edge of the lever 19. The nose-engaging arm 21, is formed with a hook or latch for engaging and locking the eye 10, of the shackle. The key 24, is entered through a keyhole 25, in the front half of the casing 2, and is pivoted upon a keypost 26, mounted in the rear half of the casing l. As the key is revolved, it engages and raises the three levers 13, 15, and 19, and when turned, as shown in Fig. 2, and the arm 17 passes from the front surface of the toe 11, allowing the link 18, to raise the nose of the shackle which will bring the toe 11, on a line below the end of the arm 17 so that as the key is further turned to bring the levers in the position shown in Fig. 3. The action of the spring 19, will release the lever 15, to its normal position and bring the end of the lever 17, in engagement with the rear surface of the toe 11, to coinplete the raising or opening of the shackle.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a padlock of the class described, the combination with a casing, a shackle pivoted therein, and locking mechanism engaging said shackle, of a shackle ejecting link adapted to raise the nose of the shackle When key-operated.
2. In a padlock of the class described, the combination with a casing having a shackle pivoted therein, and containing locking mechanism of said shackle, of a key actuated link mounted therein and adapted to engage the nose of the shackle and raise the same When released by the locking mechanism.
3. In a padlock of the class described, the combination With a casing, a shackle pivoted in said casing and having an eye formed in its nose, and a toe formed on its heel, levers mounted Within the casing for engaging 'both the eye and the toe, and a link mounted Within the casing and adapted, When raised by the key, to raise the nose of the shackle.
4. In a padlock of the class described, the combination With a casing having a shackle pivoted therein, said shackle formed With a nose end and a heel end having a toe formed thereon, of a key-actuated lever mounted Within the casing and adapted, when raised, to engage the nose end to partly raise the shackle, and a second lever adapted to engage the rear surface of the toe to complete the raising of the shackle.
5. In a padlock of the class described, the combination With a casing having a shackle pivoted therein, said shackle formed with a heel provided with a toe portion, of a lever mounted therein and designed, when in a locked position, to engage one surface of the toe to lock the shackle, when actuated by the key to release the shackle, and when actuated by a spring to engage the other surface of the toe portion to raise the shackle.
