To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE 1I. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying' drawing.
This invention relates to a self-locking padlock and more particularly to that class of padlocks in which the pivoted shackle is formed with both a hooked nose and a projecting heel; the locking levers or dogs engaging with both said hooked nose and projecting heel to etfect a double locking of the shackle.
The objects of the invention are to produce a lock of this class that shall be simple of construction, positive of action and containing only one spring; and a stationary set of key ward plates.
IVit-h these and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain construction and arrangement of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which like gures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views; but it is fully understood that while I have here described my invention as illustrated in the drawings, that I do not conne myself to the exact design as shown, as slight changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1, represents a front view of the lock, with the cover-plate or casing removed, showing the lock in a closed position. Fig. 2, is a similar View, showing the lock in an open position. Fig. 3, is a transverse section of the lock. Fig. 4, is a view of the working parts of the lock, detached and separated.
The lock is formed of the usual two-part casing l, and 2, which are formed with flanged edges which abut against each other and form the side walls of the case, and which are cut away for the entrance of the no'se and heel of the shackle 3 the two parts, 1, and 2, of the casing being held together by riveting the opposite ends of the various transverse pivot or stud pins, with which the lock is provided, and which project through openings formed in the two casings. The shackle 8, is formed with the hooked nose 4, the stop 5, for limiting its entrance into the case, and the enlarged heel portion 6, which is provided with the projecting heel 7, and toe 8.
The working parts of the lock comprise a combined dog and heel locking-plate 9, a cam-dog 10, an actuating spring 11, and a series ot' key ward-plates 12, and stud post 13.
The shackle 3, is hung upon a pivot po-st 14, and when the lock is in a closed position, the hooked nose 4, is engaged by the hooked end 15, of a cani-dog 10, which is pivoted upon the cam-post 16; the lower portion of said cam-dog 10, being formed with the heel 17, and a notch 18, cut in the rear edge of its upper portion above its pivot point for the engagement of the locking-plate 9. The locking-plate 9, is pivoted upon the pivot post 19, and is formed with the nose 20, for engaging the notch 1S, of the cam-dog 10; the notched heel 21, for engaging the projecting heel 7, of the shackle 3; and the depending portion 22, for engagement by the wards, of the key and for actuating the cam-dog 10. Said depending portion 22, is provided with a stud 13, upon which bears the short leg of a spring 11, which is retained by the pivot post 16, with its long leg in contact with the toe 8, of the shackle 3; thus tending to normally raise the shackle 3, and depress the depending port-ion 22, of the lockingplate 9.
The key ward plates 12, are stationary and are retained upon the studs 27, and 28, and are notched at 29, to correspond to the wards of the key. The key post 30, extends through said ward plates 12, and it may be noted that the key only makes about half of a complete revolution.
It will thus be seen that when the lock is closed, the hooked nose 4, of the shackle 3, is engaged by the hooked end 15, of the camdog 10, and the cam-dog 10, is retained in a locked position by the nose 20, of the locking plate 9; while the notched heel 21, of the plate 9, engages the heel 7, of the shackle 3, and effects a double lock. For opening the lock the depending portion 22, of the locking plate 9, is raised by the key ward, thus lowering and disengaging the notched heel 2l, from the shackle heel '7, and the nose 20, from the notch 18, of the cam-dog 10; While said cani-dog 10, is disengaged from the hooked nose 4, of the shackle 3, by having its heel 17, raised by the depending portion of the locking plate 9, and the released shackle 3, is raised by the exertion of the spring 1l, upon the nose 8, and the shackle heel 7, is held in the position shown in Fig. 2, bythe upper edge of the locking plate 9, bearing against it.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l, In a padlock of the class described, in combination with a combined pivoted and spring actuated shackle formed with an engaging nose and heel, of a camdog, pivot ally mounted adjacent to the nose of said shackle, said cam-dog formed With a shackle engaging hook, a lever bearing end and having a lever engaging notch formed in its edge; a locking lever pivotally mounted adjacent to said cam-dog and formed with an engaging nose for engaging the notch formed in said dog, and a notched heel for engaging the heel of said shackle, and having a l{ey \vai'd engaging portion and a spring retaining stud in the side thereof.
2. In a padlock of the class described, in combination with a casing having a spring actuated shackle pivoted thereon and formed with a notched nose and a bifurcated projecting heel, and a cam-dog pivoted in said case for engaging the Ynotched nose of said shackle, of a locking plate mounted adjacent to said cam-dog for engaging the saine and the heel of said shackle, said locking plate formed With a depending key engaging portion, a Aspring engaging stud formed on said locking plate, and an actuating spring mounted` thereon.
