COMBINED FOOT SCRA PER AND WIPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,552, dated June 14, 1898. Application filed February 14:, 1898. SerialNo. 670,229. (No model.)
. To all whom, it may concern:
- ignates a rectangular plate.
Be it known that I, ISRAEL KINNEY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Foot Scraper and Wiper; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the sam'e,.reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to; new and useful improvements in a combined foot scraper and wiper; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out particularly in the claim.
The object of the invention is to procure-a combined foot scraper and wiper that will be cheap, simple, and durable, and one wherein the greater portion of the dirt on ones feet may be scraped off and the remainder wiped onto the wiping material at the side of said scraper, thus enabling the shoes to be thoroughly cleaned and the wiper to be kept clean for a considerable length of time, which object is attained by the construction and association of parts illustrated in the accompan ying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective v of my improved foot scraper and wiper complete. Fig. 2 is an enlarged bottom plan of same. a perspective view of the scraper and frames for retaining the wiping material, said material being removed. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the bar and side rails of the frame for retaining the fibrous wiping material in place.
Referring to theletters of reference, A des- At the back of said plate and extending at right angles therefrom is a blade orv scraper B;said plate being provided with's-uitable apertures a, through which screws, nails, or otherdevices may be passed to secure said plate in, place.
'At each end of the plate A and on a plane therewith isa rectangular frame C,said frame having the center of its end pieces raised ,and
Fig. 3 isa bar D, extending centrally over the opening in said frame from the raise on one end piece to the raise on the other. For cheapness of construction I form the plate A, scraperB, frame 0, and barD integral by 5 5 casting said parts in one piece.
E designates sections of rope, cut the proper length, which are doubled upon their center and passed up from the under side of the frame, with one end of said b'entsections 011 either side of the bar D, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. This operation is'continue'd until the space between the ends of the'frame'O is filled with such sections, when the portions that extend over the side rails of the frame are untwisted or frayed out into shreds until the fiber of the rope-sections is completely changed from the formercompressed condition. The only part of the rope-sections that retain their former appearance and form is that which extends across the frames 0 and under the bar D, as clearly shown 'in Fig. 2. After the rope-sections have been untwisted it will be impossible to withdraw them. from the frame, as the untwisted ends of said sections occupy a greater space and are too bulky to be drawn out of the frame, and when the loosened ends of the fiber have become intert-angled in its shredded condition it is impossible to withdraw a single strand. Should'the wiping material become wet, the sections of the fibrous material that extend under the bar Dandover' the sides of the frame will become expanded by absorbing moisture and the more tightly bind said fibrous material in place in the frame, as will be well understood.
It will now be seen that by employing the parts. comprising this improved foot scraper and wiper associated in the manner set forth a very useful and durable article is produced, the parts being few and so bstantial, and there is nothing to get out of order, and after it has once been located will serve for a long time, as it can easily be cleaned when desired. 5
By raising the bar D above the plane of the side rails of the frame 0 that portion of the rope-sections which extend under said bar will be above the lower surface of saidframe and plate A, thereby enabling said IO frame at the end of said plate, the bar formed integral therewith and extending across the opening in said frame, the wiping; material extending under said bar and over the sides of said frame, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 15 in presence 0f two witnesses.
ISRAEL KINNEY. \Vitnesses:
C. I. LL'KAN, O. U. BLACKMAN.
