SAMUEL P. JAGGARD, OF BLAOKVVOOD, NEW JERSEY.
lAR, TOP, AND WRENCH FOR PRE SE RVING FRUITS OR THE LIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,482, dated June 14, 1898.
' Application filed September 4, 189-7. Serial No. 650,599. (No model.)
Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in jars, tops, and wrenches for the preserving of fruits and the like, and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and.
efiective arrangement by which leverage may be brought to bear upon both the jar and the top for the securement of the latter in place or the removal thereof from the jar; and with these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may under-f stand how to make and use the same, its construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in
which is shown in perspective the upper portion of a jar and cap thereon and the wrenches applied to said jar and cap for its manipulation.
In carrying out my invention as here em bodied I form upon the upper portion of the jar A, just below the neck thereof, a polygonal ring or band B of less diameter than the body of the jar, thereby producing a shoulder. This ring or band is adapted to receive a wrench O, which is limited in its downward movement by the shoulder, and from this I point upward projects a threaded neck which considerable length of time the adhesion between said cover and jar becomesso great as to render it next to impossible to move the cover by the ordinary methods, whereas by my improvement the application of the wrench O to'the jar and the wrench F to the cover will give such leverage and purchase as to enable a person of comparatively small strength to easily remove the cover, and it is also understood that the preservation of the contents of the jars depends largely upon the cover being secured tightly thereon, so as to hermetically seal the same, and this is also readily accomplished by the use of my improvements. 3
The cost of manufacture of a jar and a cover in accordance with my improvement is not increased over the old method, since the only difference therein is the shape thereof and the only additional expense of the Wrenches, which may be used indefinitely and for any number of jars.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- 1. A jar comprising a body, a polygonal at the top thereof, a threadedneck of still smaller'diameter formed on said body and a slanting surface formed between said neckand said ring on which a washer is adapted to rest, a cover for said jar threaded to fit; the threaded neck, said cover having a top poly onal in shape and of less diameter than the body thereof producing a shoulder, as and for the purpose described.
2. The herein-described combination of a jar having a threaded neck and cover threaded to fit said neck, said jar and cover having surfaces formed thereon, adapted to be engaged by wrenches, said surfaces being formed in such a manner as to prevent the wrenches from slipping downward, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto af- S. S. WILLIAMsON, F. MATTNER.
