IlNIrnn STATES WILLIAM GRIBBEN AND HARVEY W. SMITH, OF OARSONVILLE, MICHIGAN.
COVER FOR CROOKS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters I atent No. 604,040, dated May 17, 1898. Application filed June 9, 1897. Serial No. 640,003. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM GRIBBEN and HARVEY W. SMITH, citizens of the United States, residing at Oarsonville, in the county of Sanilac and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Cover for Crooks, &c., of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in covers for crooks, (lac.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of covers for buttercrocks, 850., and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient cover which may be readilyremoved and replaced on a crock without liability of the fastening-band becoming separated from the cover.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a crock-cover constructed in accordance with this invention and shown arranged on a crock. Fig. 2 is avertical sectionalview of the same.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
1 designates a cover constructed of flexible material, preferably paper, and consisting of a horizontal top portion and depending sides 2, adapted to fit the cylindrical outer face of a crock and formed by crimping or folding the paper to provide a snug fit. The crimped or folded sides 2 of the paper or other material of which the cover is constructed is retained in shape by a fastening ring or band 3, preferably of Wire, havingits endst twisted together.
In order to retain the wire tie or band on the cover and prevent it from becoming accidentally separated therefrom in removing the cover from a crock andin placing it thereon, the edges of thesides are expanded and arranged horizontally to form a flange 5 and afford asupport for the tie or band, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings. The supportingflange, which forms a convenient grip or handle, enables the cover to be readily conveyed toand from a crock without liability of dropping the wire tie or band, and when the cover is on the crock it prevents the tie or band from accidentally slipping downward out of engagement with it. Italso enables the cover to be readily fitted on and removed from the crock without tearing.
This invention has the following advantages: The cover is simple and cheap and it is adapted to be readily handled without tearing it. The horizontal supporting-flange, besides serving to retain the fastening ring or band in place, provides a convenient grip and greatly facilitates placing the cover on and removing it from a crock. The said flange is also conveniently formed by expanding the previously folded or contracted sides of the cover.
The essential feature of the invention resides in the horizontal supportingflange, which forms a grip or handle and which holds the tie in position both when the cover is on the crock and when it is removed therefrom, and the paper or other material of which the cover is constructed must have sufficient body to provide a comparatively stiff flange, capable of retaining its shape and position both when on and 0d the crock.
What we claim is- The combination with a croclg, and a fastening ring or band, of a removable cover constructed of flexible material and comprising a horizontal top. portion, depending crimped or folded sides receiving the ring or band, and a stiff horizontal flange formed by expanding and extending outward the lower edges or portions of the depending sides and supporting the ring or band both when the cover is on and off the crock, said flange also serving as a grip or handle to enable the cover to be readily placed on and removed from the crock, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto afflxed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM GRIBBEN. HARVEY w. SMITH.
