J.` n. Manns AND o. w.Y YALE, or osHKosH,w1rscoivsnv@.4
v'Letters Patent No. 60,403, dated December 1-1, 1866. i i i TO' ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;
Beit known that we, J. H. MEARS and C. W.VYALE, of Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago, and State `of i i i Wisconsin, have invented a new and improved Knuckle Joint; and we do hereby declare `thatthefollowingis `a i 4jnakilig'a.pm-tof.this if i follandv exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawin specification, in whichi l l i Figures Land 2 is a perspective view of our invention. Figures 3 and 4 is a top view of the same. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parte inv the :several figures.
This invention consists of a knuckle 'joint i madefof cast ironor any other suitable `lnietalQfor Aconnecting` i i togetherA the tumbling 4rodsof thrashing machines, and the sliafting` of other lznachineliy,` which require `tobe y placed in an oblique position relatively with each other; to enable `those skilled in the `art to fullyinndeistand J and construct our invention', we will proceed to describe it. v 1 VFigure 1 is a socket or bairel with its internal sides or surfaces pentagonal in form, with a hole at E, in which thev tumbling rod 0r shaft can be keyed or fastened. Fig; 2 is a head which is also pentagonal` forni, and also somewhat spheroidical, which also hasa hole-at P,-passing`through it to admit of a tumbling rod` or shaft being keyed or are placed in parallel lines to those in the socket, and when in the socket can be turned in an oblique` position"i relative to the socket. The socket or barrel, fig. 1, is inade suiiiciently long `to admit ofthe headfig. 2 slipping, it will beseen that .as `the head igrl is tunied` endway's along Vits inner surface. From the above description when placed in the socketJig. 2, by its tumblingrodor shaft, it will also turn `the socket with imby tlieirfsurI faces coming in contact, although they may be placed in an oblique that there are knuckle joints in use having ribs extending along the inner surface ofthe socket, `andi coi-respond-` ing grooves along the head which has'a tendency to weaken those parts. The device `asia whole is ektremely l 1 ordinary machines simple, there being no parts liable to become deranged by use, and may be applied toany where knuckle joints are used.4 4 p v Having thus described our invention, what we claimas new, and desire "to secure b'yfmllietters` Pateu`t,ls`
