J. W. BROWN. RAZOR STROP CASING.
Patented Apr. 26, 1898.
WITNESSES:
ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT rrrcn.
JOHN W. BROWN, on FORT WAYNE, INDIANA.
RAZOR-STROP CASING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,074, dated April 26, 1898.
Application filed June 4, 1897. Serial No. 639,472. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. BROWN, acitizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razor-Strop Casings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in razor-strop casings wherein a case having a spring-actuated winding-drum is mounted at its bottom and which is adapted to draw the razor-strop within said case; and the object of my improvement is to provide a dust-proof casing for razonstrops and means in connection therewith for automatically incasing said strop. I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation in section, showing the relative position of parts. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, and Fig. 3 is a perspective, of the clamping device for the upper ends of the strop.
Similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The casing 1 is preferably constructed of wood, but may be also constructed of sheet metal. Upon the back of said casing near the top and bottom are secured metallic plates 17 17 of a form suitable for securing said casing to a wall, chair-,"or other fixture. This casing is hollow throughout its length, presenting an outturned opening 2 at its upper forward end. Near the mouth of this opening, on the lower side, is loosely mounted a roller 4, over which the strop 7 8 is adapted to be drawn.
Near the lower end of the casing 1 is hinged a lid 13, having a central opening in which is mounted the cap 14. In this cap is secured a shaft 16, which afiords a mounting for the spring-actuated drum 15. Upon the outer perimeter of this drum is wound a metallic ribbon 19. The drum is actuated by means of a retracting spring (not shown, the
construction being ordinary) and tends to hold the said ribbon in normal position.
The drum 15 and cap 14. may be mounted upon the rear of the casing 1 instead of the front, as shown.
The strop 7 8 is of the ordinarydouble type, secured at its lower end to the metallic ribbon 19 by means of a swivel connection. Near the upper end of the strop is secured a clamp consisting of two plates 5 5, having.
lower projecting flanges 18 18. A piece of leather 3, having a central opening, is also mounted upon said strop immediately below said clamp and is secured in place by means of rivets passing through the leather and" clamp. This leather is adapted to fit over and close the mouth of the opening 2 when the strop is drawn into the casing. The plates 5 are secured together by means of screws 6 and may be rendered more efficient by notching their inner faces. The roller 4 serves as a frictional bearing for the strop, but may be omitted, if desired, and a round opening used instead. It will thus be seen that the strop tends to maintain a straight position within the casing and is exposed only when in use. WVhen it is desired to use the under side of the strop, the operator draws the strop entirely out of the casing, and being connected by a swivel-joint it is only necessary to turn the strop as desired.
By the use of my invention the strop is kept dry, clean, straight, and out of the way.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a razor-sirop casing, the combinationof a case having a length suitable to contain the strop; a spring-actuated drum mounted at the bottom of said case; a ribbon wound upon said drum; the said drum and ribbon being adapted to draw the strop within said case; and suitable means for connecting the strop to said ribbon, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. BROWN.
