Description

SOLOMON A. WINKLEPLECK, 0F SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA'.
RAZOR-snmp PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 4, 1921.
Application filed March 3, 1919. Serial No. 289,405.
To all whom t may concer/n.'
Be it lmown that I, SOLOMON A. VINKnE- PLECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Ana, in the county of Orange and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Razor-Strop Protectors, of which the following 1s a specification.
My object is to make a disappearing razor strop, and my invention consists of the novel features'herein shown, described and claimed.
Figure l isa fragmentary perspective of a barbers back mirror case provided with a disappearing razor strop embodying the principles of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional detail upon an enlarged scale and on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and showing the razor strop in disappearing position out of use.
Fig. 3 is a view analogous to Fig. 2 and upon a reduced scale and showing the razor strop drawn out for use.
Fig. 4 is a crosssection on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a perspective of the bearing through which the strop operates.
Fig. 6 is a perspective of the roller stand.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary horizontal sec'- tional detail on the line 7 7 of Fig. 3.
' The strop box consists of a bottom 1, sides 2 and 3 extending upwardly from the bottom, a rear end 4 extending upwardly from the bottom and connecting the rear ends ofthe sides, a top 5 fixed upon the sides and rear end 4, and the front 6 mounted upon the bottom between the sides and supporting the front end of the top. The box thus constructed is adapted to be mounted against the side of the mirror case 7 directly under the shelf 8. The roller stand 9, shown in Fig. 6, comprises the attaching plate 10 having screw holes 11 and 12, the pedestals 13 and 14 extending upwardly from the ends of the attaching plate. the half bearings 15 and 16 formed upon the upper ends of the pedestals 13 and 14, the half bearing 15 having a circular bearing recess 17 and the half bearing 16 having a square bearing recess 18, the cap 19 secured to the half bearing 15 and completing the bearing 17 and the cap 20 secured to the half bearing 16 and completing the bearing 18, and the cap 20 having a vertical central opening 21.
The shaft 22 has 'a round end 23 fitting in the round bearing 17, and a square end 24 fitting in the square bearing 18. A pin 25 is driven through the opening 21 into the shaft 22 to hold thev shaft from moving. A clock spring 26 has its innerend'attached to the shaft 22. The drum head 27 is rotatably mounted upon the shaft 22-inside of the bearing 17, and the drum rim 28 extends from the drum head 27. The drum head 29 is rotatably mounted upon the shaft 22 inside of the bearing 18 and secured on to the drum rim 28 so as to inclosethe spring 26. The outer end of the spring 26 is secured to the drum rim 28 by a screw30. .The connecting strap 31l is attached to the screw 30 and wound upon the drum rim 28. Pads 32 and 33 are placed against the inner and outer faces of the free end of the connecting strap 31, plates34 and 35 are placed against the pads, andbolts 36 are inserted through the plates, pads and belt to clamp the pads in place. The edges of the pads extend beyond theedges of the plates so as to makenon-metallic bumpers upon the connecting strap 31. An opening 37 is made through the end of the connecting strap 31 in front of the bumpers 32 and 33. A string 38 is inserted through the opening 37 and through the back ends of the razor strops 39 and 4() vand tied so asto connect the razor strops 39 and 40 to the connecting strap 31. The razor strops 39 and 40 are wound together upon the drurno'n top of the connecting strap 31'.
The bearing 41 is inserted through the front 6 near its top. As shown in Fig. 5, the bearing 41 comprises a lower side plate 42, an upper side plate 43, end plates 44 and 45 connecting the lower and upper side plates, arms 46 and 47 extending backwardly from the end plates 44 and 45, and a rim 48 extending around the front edges of the plates 42, 43, 44 and 45, the passage through the rim Haring outwardly to make a round edge for the strops to rub against. The bearing is inserted in place from the front side of the front 6, and the razor strops 39 and 40 pass through the opening 48 between the arms 46 and 47 and through the box formed by the plates 42, 43, 44 and 45, and when the strops are drawn out through the opening 49 to their limits the bumpers 32 and 33 will engage the rear edges of the plates 42 and 43 and resist further outward movement, so that the strops will be held for use. The arms 46 and 47 t against the inner faces of the sides 2 and 3 and are held in place by screws inserted through openings and 51 into the sides.
The handle pieces 52 and 53, are secured to the ends of the razor strops 39 and 40, and a wedge 54 is secured to the inner face of one handle. tospread the handles apart, so that when the strops are released the spring 26 will wind thestrops upon the drum and draw the strops through the opening 49 until the wedge 54 is about to enter the opening 49, and this wedge will spread the handle pieces 52 and 53 apart and make a stop to limit the withdrawal of the strops, so that the handle pieces 52 and 53 will always project from the box ready to be grasped to pull the strops out for use. A sliding bolt 55 is mounted in a housing 56, and the housing 56 is integral with the attaching plate 57, and the attaching plate is secured to the front face of the front 6 by screws 58, so that the bolt 55 is directly under the center of the bearing 41. `When it is desired-to change the razor strops 39 and 40 the said strops are pulled through the opening 49 until the pulled pads 32 and 33 engage the inner end of said opening. In this position the connecting strap 31 will project slightly outwardly from the opening 49 with the opening 37 in said connecting strap 31 in position to receive the bolt when the latter is moved upwardly. The connecting strap 31 is thus held in position while the razor strops 39 and 40 may be removed from the connecting strap 31 and other razor strops substituted therefor.
The door opening 59 is formed in the front 6 near the bottom, and the door 60 is mounted in place to open and close, so that a receptacle 61 may be inserted through the door, and so that when the door is closed the box is practically air tight. The receptacle 61 may be filled with any desired antiseptic or germicide so as to 'keep the razor strops 39 and 40 in a sanitary condition. A stop 62 is mounted upon the bottom 1 to hold the receptacle 61 from sliding back out of reach and in position to contact with the drum.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. The combination of a razor strop, a box, a flexible connection to which the razor strop is attached, means for drawing said iiexible connection into said box, the front wall of said box having an opening through which the razor strop extends, a handle projecting from the forward end of the strop, and means for holding said fiexible connection so that while said flexible connection is thus held the razor strop may be removed and another razor strop substituted therefor.
2. The combination of a razor strop, a box, a flexible connection attached to said strop, means tending to move said flexible connection into said box, and means for temporarily holding the end of said flexible connection adjacent said razor strop so that the razor strop may be removed and another razor strop substituted therefor.
3. The combination of a razor strop, a box, the front wall of the box having an opening through which the strop is drawn outwardly for use, a handle on the forward end of the strop, flexible means attached y to the strop for drawing the strop into said box, said flexible means having an opening at the end adjacent the strop for the reception of a bolt, and a sliding bolt on the outside vof the box below the opening therein adapted to project into said opening of said flexible means to hold the strop drawn out of the box.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
S. A. WINKLEPLECK.
