WASTE PLUG.
No. 601.394. Patented Mar. 29, 1898.

HENRY BREYER, JR., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
'WASTE-PLU'G.
. SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N 601,394, dated March 29, 1898.
Application filed November 13, 1897. Serial No. 658,474. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BREYER, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Waste-Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to waste-plugs commonly used in connection with 'washbowls, bath-tubs, &c. There are various designs of such articles now in use, and my invention is a general improvement in the form and construction of them, tending to improve their usefulness, appearance, and lasting qualities, as will be further shown in the description.
The accompanying drawings show in Fig ure 1 a side view ofthe metallic plug proper; Fig. 2, a sectional view of the same; Fig. 8, a
- side view of the plug complete with covering;
Fig. 4:, a sectional view of the plug resting in an ordinary wasteway.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts in the different figures.
'1 is a hemispherical or similar-shaped 'portion formed of lead or other suitable material, having a stem 4:, provided with a hole 5 for inserting the ring 3. Resting on the upper flattened surface of the part 1' is a metallic disk 2, which projects somewhat beyond the circumference of the hemispherical portion. Having these parts fitted together, the plug is finished by entirely covering the stem, disk, and hemispherical portion with a layer or mantle 6, of rubber or similar material, as
shown, or by simply covering the disk and lower part, and tofurther insure a perfect stoppage I have provided an annular groove 7 in the covering on the lower side of the water to come in contact with both sides of the rubber, thereby causing it to soften and decay, while others depend entirely on the close contact of the sides of the plug with the vent for stoppage. I have endeavored to overcome such objections and further improve the usefulness of such articles, and while I do not claim such a contrivance broadly,
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In awasteway-plug, the combination of a hemispherical inner portion, a stem integral therewith, means for attaching a ring or pull to said stem, a disk encircling said stem, a cover or mantle surrounding said parts, provided with an annular groove in the lower side of the flange formed by the projecting sides of said disk.
2. A wasteway-plug consisting of an inner portion of lead or other suitable material and an outer portion of rubber or similar material, having a lower portion adapted to fit the vent or wasteway opening, a flanged portion surmounting said lower portion and provided on the lower surface with an annular groove, substantially as described. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY BREYER, JR.
