COVER FOR HOUSEHOLD UTENSILS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RALEIGH C. VILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Covers for Household Utensils, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in covers for household utensils such as are usually used in a sick room.

It has for one of its objects the provision of a device of that kind which may be place on the reservoir or receptacle in a noiseless manner and when so placed will form a tight closure, whereby the escape of offen sive gases and odors from the receptacle will be positively prevented.

With these and other objects in view, which will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim; it being understood that vaform, proportion, size, and minor details of the device may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification z-Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view taken through a cover and also showing my device in sectional end elevation and bearing on the rim of a vessel. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the cover with the gasket removed and showing the contour of the groove. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective of the gasket. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional plan View approximately on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.

The receptacle is designated by the numeral 5 and at its upper end is shown provided with a rounded edge 6. Since these parts are all of well-known construction a detail description of the same need not be given.

prises a cover designated by the numeral 7. The cover is preferably circular in contour and depending from its lower face and adjacent the periphery is a flange 8. The flange 8 is designed to bear on the inner surface of the receptacle while that portion between the flange and periphery of the cover bears on the rounded edge 6 and is sli htly curved to conform to the curvature of the said rounded edge. Formed on the lower surface of the cover and located between the flange 8 and periphery of the cover is an annular dove-tailed groove 9 the side walls of which incline outwardly from the bearing surface of the cover.

lVhat will subsequently be termed a gasket is designated in general by the numeral 10. This member is preferably of rubber or other elastic material and has embedded therein a pair of metallic reinforcing strips 11 and 12. The gasket includes a widened base portion 13 of a width corresponding to the distance between the periphery of the cover and lower end of the flange 8, or approximately so and formed on the upper face of the base portion 13 is a dove-tailed rib 14. It might here be stated that the gasket is in the form of an annulus correspondingV in diameter to the diameter of the cover 7, or approximately so. The dove-tailed groove 9 receives the rib 14, and when so positioned it is evident that the said rib will be held against displacement therein. By the provision of the dove-tailed groove and rib I overcome the usual means for securing devices of this kind which consists in cementing the gasket to the cover. It is found that when the same is so secured the gases and moisture rising from the re ceptacle will soon eat away the cement, whereby the gasket will become disengage from its position. It will be further observed by the provision of the reinforcing strips 11 and 12 that the contour of the 13 will be maintained against It will be further evident by the provision of the widened base portion 13, when the cover is placed upon the receptacle no part of its surface will contact with the receptacle, whereby the cover may be placed thereon in a noiseless manner.
